Humanities / Social Sciences Project Researchers - European Research Council Project at Kenyatta University


3 full-time Project Researchers in Humanities/Social Sciences required for a 5-year European Research Council project at Kenyatta University
This is an exciting opportunity for outstanding, ambitious researchers in the humanities and social sciences to work as part of a large research team on an international Cultural Studies project. The project has received research funding from the European Union.
Three Project Researchers in (1) Public Health, Urban Sociology and/or the Environment; (2) Media and Communications; (3) Education are required to generate data and reports for a European Research Council (ERC) project on ‘The Cultural Politics of Dirt in Africa, 1880-present’. This five-year project follows four key themes—colonialism, the environment, sexuality and ethnicity—and examines everyday urban practices in Nairobi and Lagos, with particular attention to the ways in which urban encounters and identities are represented and interpreted through English and local-language categories denoting dirt.

Three teams of researchers—one in the UK, one in Lagos and one in Nairobi—will conduct interviews, gather data, and undertake media studies and content analyses in a variety of urban settings. The successful candidate for each post described below must be an outstanding researcher with a proven track record of excellence within their discipline. He/she will require exceptional organisational, communication and research skills, and he/she must be able to meet strict fortnightly project deadlines. The post brings opportunities for travel and professional training in the UK.
Duration: to be appointed and employed full-time from 1st January 2014 to 31st August 2017, and half-time from 1st September 2017 to 31st August 2018.
Salary range: Details to be discussed during the interviews, second week of January, 2014.The appointment is for a fixed-term contract for four years full time and one year (Year 5) half time starting 1st February, 2014.

Ujamaa – Africa, is a Kenyan NGO that promotes economic empowerment, personal security and health for vulnerable women and girls.

We are currently involved in a groundbreaking research program which has thus far demonstrated a dramatic decrease in the prevalence of rape in the 5 urban slum areas, where Ujamaa teaches a proprietary girl’s empowerment and boy’s transformation program in schools, CBOs, FBOs and in other forums. 

Thus far our work is published or under review in 2 prestigious international journals and we are submitting the dramatic results of our 2013 intervention in the next month
We are looking for a researcher who must have creative analytical thinking, strong presentation skills with the ability to turn complex data/concepts into clear insights.

The incumbent must also have strong personal attributes.

Specific Tasks

Manage all aspects of complex research projects, including negotiating project objectives and direction with other managers.Create comprehensive project plans to ensure projects are  completed successfully.Prepare periodic presentations for management regarding research project status and recommendations.Strategic planning of research schedules.Perform periodic evaluations to allow the director to determine effectiveness of our programs and make suggestions when applicable.Ensure that the questionnaire scripts are well mastered by the facilitators, to maintain all ethics of research.Ensure that data collected is entered into Ujamaa’s (Information System) databaseParticipate in knowledge impact assessments and reporting.Supervise & assist field agents in any tasks that have set deadlines.Identify challenges and build capacity of community units and staff on facilitation, data collection, mobilization skills among other identified needs.Work with various research databases and Ujamaa Softwares to input data from other departments.Coordinate testing, installation and compile modification reports for all departments in Ujamaa.Document best practices and submit work for publication in partnership with reputable Kenyan and American Universities (Current Academic Partners include USIU, University of Nairobi, UCLA)Perform other duties as assigned.Degree in any Research related field. HelpAge Project Consultant to Support the Operational Research Component of the Project Job in Kenya


Terms of Reference, for a Consultant to support the Operational Research Component of the Project: ‘Strengthening Social Protection to prevent and mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa’

HelpAge International East, West and Central Africa regional office based in Nairobi Kenya, with funding support from Sweden / Norad, seeks a consultant to support the project’s research component under the study topic: Effects of regional and national (Public) policies on vulnerable populations in Eastern and Southern Africa.  

The study will cover Sweden/Norad funded project sites in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Africa and Zambia.

Project Background

In 2011, HelpAge received funding from Sweden/Norad to implement a three year project, running from 2011- 2013. 

The goal of the project is to contribute to universal  access to HIV and AIDS services and Social Protection (SP) mechanisms for vulnerable groups in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2013.
 

The project has four result areas:Universal access to  HIV and AIDS services and Social Protection Mechanisms for Vulnerable groups is increasedRegional and National level HIV&AIDS  and SP policies and related [policies] plans and budgets increasingly incorporate measures which address the needs of vulnerable groups.Increased participation of Civil Society organisations in the formulation,  implementation and monitoring of National and Regional HIV and AIDS and Social Protection policies and strategiesEvidence on effective action contributing to the achievement of universal  HIV&AIDS and SP services gathered, documented and shared and acted on among CSOs, Governments and other stake holdersConsultancy Objectives and Scope of Work
This study will generate evidence on the learning and contribute to the project result areas above.  The study seeks to establish the benefits and changes in the lives of vulnerable populations attributable to policy formulation and policy implementation.  The consultant will therefore endeavour to provide evidence/information on the following areas:

a) How policies are formulated in Eastern and Southern Africa/How are the intended beneficiaries involved in Policy formulation?

b) Does enactment of relevant policies translate into improved services for the intended target group?
c) Are policies in Eastern and Southern Africa supported with implementation benchmarks and how and who is involved in policy monitoring?
d) Are policies in Eastern and southern Africa supported by pre-requisite resources and  support structures
e) What has changed as a result of the enactment of these policies in respective project site countries on the intended target groups?

The consultant is required to:

a) Work with HelpAge staff to review and improve on the research question and research design
b) Conduct literature review from HelpAge programme database and other relevant sources
c) Conduct key informant interviews with key resource persons to fill in the gaps in the literature review.
d) Analyse data and write a report

Deliverables

Research study report validated by stakeholders and approved for implementation

Education and Experience:

a) Postgraduate with extensive experience in policy research in Eastern and Southern Africa.
b) Strong knowledge on rights based approaches to programming

Expression of interest

All interested consultants/firms are requested to write an expression of interest by:

Lifecourse Study is a project on adherence to antiretroviral medication based in Kenyatta National Hospital wishes to recruit for the position outlined below in one of their sites in Mombasa.  

The terms of employment are for 1 year renewable contract based on performance.

Research Project Physician (Mombasa)

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized institution, and be registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board. 

They must also have training and certification in Human Subjects Protection and Good Clinical Practice. A minimum of one (1) year of work in human subjects research, including management of clinical trials with external monitoring, is required. Applicants must also have experience with pelvic speculum examinations, collection of specimens for STI diagnosis, and management of STIs according to both syndromic guidelines and directed treatment based on diagnostics. Experience with antiretroviral therapy initiation, continuation, and regimen switching is also required.

The successful applicant will be responsible for clinical care of patients, supervision of clinic staff, collection and analysis of data, coordination of external monitoring visits, presentation of results at conferences, and writing of research papers. 

S/he must be able to work with minimal supervision and be ready to work long hours when necessary.

ILRI Research Analyst Job in Nairobi, Kenya


Research Analyst, Index Based Livestock Insurance

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries.

The Position

This position would be part of the team developing, piloting, assessing the impact of, and scaling-up index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) products. 

Two comprehensive pilots have already been launched in Marsabit district of Northern Kenya and Borena Zone in Southern Ethiopia (see www.ilri.org/ibli). 

 The successful applicant will play a central role in managing and coordinating the research operations for the team. 

The candidate will support team scientists with data analysis and writing to exploit the rich existing panel data and contribute to writing scientific papers. 

The IBLI project conducts two large annual household surveys in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia and several other specialized modules throughout the year. 

It also utilizes a suite of remotely sensed data.  This position also involves coordinating and supporting the implementation of these surveys and will be expected to contribute to survey and research as well as overseeing data cleaning and storage.

Key responsibilities

Provide research and analytical support to project scientists and contribute to research papersWrite research reports summarizing and analysing dataContribute to the IBLI research for development agenda (research design and strategy, survey instruments, sampling frame, survey implementation strategy, enumerator training, data collection and analysis).Oversee management of project data: data cleaning, data inventory and storage, data analysis.Writing and updating survey data codebooks that fully describe the research and survey design, data collection methods, cleaning and inventory process.Contribute to communication and dissemination of research findings, which should include participation in meetings and workshops, giving periodic presentations to participating institutions, and communicating to policy makers through web and popular media.A Master’s degree in Economics, Development Economics, Agricultural Economics, Statistics or other relevant discipline.  Minimum 2 years of post-Master’s experience in quantitative and qualitative household-level socio-economic data collection and analysis; experience must involve field work and survey implementation as well as data analysis and report writing.Ability to clean, manage, and analyze household-level socio-economic panel data sets with statistical software including Stata. Experience in SQL is added advantage.  Experience in managing or playing a leading role in research programs involving field survey implementation and empirical analysis.Ability to design questionnaires and implementing surveys using computer assisted personal interviewing software such as surveybe.Experience in presenting and publishing research outputs.Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teams.Ability to communicate and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, enumerators, commercial partners, and local stakeholders.Terms of Appointment

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus.  The position is on a 2 year contract with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

Job level and salary

Minimum Requirements:
