Research Assistant: icipe Jobs in Kenya

icipe’s Behavioural and Chemical Ecology Department seeks to urgently hire a dynamic and motivated Research Assistant to fill a position that will soon fall vacant. The position is based here at Duduville campus and is offered initially for a two year contract.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main functions of this position will comprise of among other things:
  • To Isolate and characterize biologically active compounds.
  • Test the efficiency of isolates in bioassays.
  • Synthesize bioactive compounds and their analogues.
Requirements
  • Be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc) in Chemistry with specialization in Chemical Ecology from a recognized University.
  • Have at least two years relevant working experience with adequate familiarity of GC, GC-MS, HPLC and spectroscopic techniques and insects.
  • Good communication skills both oral and written.
  • Be computer literate and have some Statistical analytical background.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to work with minimum supervision.

icipe seeks to recruit a suitable candidate to fill the position of Senior Research Assistant/Biostatistician in our Biostatistics Unit.

The successful candidate will be required to perform the following duties among other things:

Requirements
  • An M.Sc degree in Bio-Statistics/Applied Statistics/Biometry from a recognized University.
Experience
  • Proficiency in the use of Ms Word, Excel, R and SAS.
  • Proficiency in epidemiological data analysis using R
  • Knowledge in Basic Health Research Ethics
  • Experience in handling large databases on infectious diseases
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good communication skill
Responsibilities
  • Provide statistical consultation to researchers/scientists in designing experiments and surveys
  • Undertake data analysis and relate the outcome of these to researchers in a comprehensive manner where necessary.
  • Ensure sound statistical practice by reviewing work-plans, scientific reports, proposals and publications.
  • Maintain statistical software packages and provide trouble-shooting back ups for users
  • Conduct in-house Staff training Courses in Bio-statistics and use of R/ SAS Statistical softwares
  • Supervise interns in the Biostatistics Unit
  • Manage data and carry out statistical exploration of established data bases.

icipe seeks to recruit a young and highly motivated ICT Support Specialist to work in the Information Tachnology Unit. This position exists to provide a ICT Service support to the users at the Duduville campus of icipe.

The positions is central to ensuring the efficient use of ICT equipment, applications and resources on the campus through the resolution of high-end problems and passing-on of their knowledge and experience.

They will be responsible for resolving requests logged by users on campus.

Requirements

Qualifications: What is the minimum level of Education required to do the job?
  • Academic: First Degree in Computer Science
  • Technical: Certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) or equivalent and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
  • Essential Short Courses: Computer Applications and Customer service training
Other Essential requirements for the job:
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to pass on information clearly to users and to grasp difficulties perceived by users.
  • Strong customer service orientation that establishes a good working relationship with customers, with the attitude of wanting to assist people and pass-on their knowledge and experience to others.
  • Organized, dynamic self-starter who sees the position as a step in their career development.
  • Good logical diagnostic skills and ability to exercise good judgement in the resolution of problems.
  • Ability to multi-task in dealing with several different problems at a time.
  • Advanced proficiency in the core applications used at icipe including MS Office Suite and knowledge in BackOffice products supported by the ICT Unit.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, monitor and follow-up on pending matters under minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work under high pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years experience in an ICT support environment similar to icipe’s.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to the users and “non-core application users” on the campus by diagnoses and resolution of ICT problems.
  • Take over the resolution of problems that have been escalated by the “power users” and have them resolved within the assigned timeframe.
  • Lead ICT projects that are implemented by the ICT Support team, including the roll-out of new applications and equipment.
  • Provide the link between ICT Support Services and the Infrastructure team to ensure that essential tasks are carried out and do not fall between the two teams.
  • Keep the helpdesk status for requests up-to-date, attempt to resolve the problem as soon as possible but definitely within the timeframe set by the priority level and close the call as soon as the problem has been resolved to the satisfaction of the customer.
  • Supervise students that are on attachment to the ICT Unit.
  • Monitor the implementation of policies, procedures and standards on the campus and make the necessary corrections where necessary.
  • Identify commonly recurring requests for assistance and provide advice on how these can be prevented or minimised, through training, user awareness, changes in configuration etc.
  • Research into finding more effective ways of using and configuring applications that can then be rolled out across the campuses or posted to the intranet and communicated to staff for their use.
  • Keep up-to-date with changes and advancements in ICT Support Services and the type of applications that are supported and make suggestions for improvements to the services provided.
What are the performance standards & indicators for the job?
  • Smooth day-to-day running of ICT resources at the desktop.
  • Customer satisfaction among the users on campus.
  • Monthly helpdesk reports show that service requests are being resolved within the expected time frame and that recurrence of common problems is reduced.
  • Efficient use of ICT equipment, applications and resources by staff on the campuses.
  • Annual customer satisfaction surveys indicate high levels of actual and perceived satisfaction with the support provided by the Unit.
  • Useful user awareness documents are posted the Intranet.

Requirements
  • A PhD degree in natural sciences and environmental management with relevance to climate change issues.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of professional working experience in climate change in one of the components listed or related agriculture, natural science or environmental fields, preferably with a focus in African countries.
  • Excellent leadership skills and knowledge base of the theories, concepts and approaches relevant to climate change adaptation and other emerging environmental challenges in Africa
  • Ability to link climate change vulnerability and adaptation with sustainable development strategies and policies
  • A proven track record of fundraising, convincing publication record, intimate knowledge of Africa, and willingness to contribute to capacity building
  • Job requires frequent travelling within Africa.
Responsibilities

The position will lead activities related to the impact of Climate change on ecosystem services and food security in the Afromontane biodiversity hotspots in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

The project will ensure delivery of key outcomes under the following main components:
  • Remote sensing and GIS; beneficiaries and benefits of ecosystem services;
  • agriculture (pollination and pests) and livelihoods;
  • biodiversity, land cover change, habitats and food security; hydrology;
  • adaptation strategies to changes in pollination, pests, water provision;
  • and dissemination and sustainability.

The candidate will evaluate the socio-economic impact of the repellent technology and its impact on gender, document farmers’ perceptions and adoption potential.

The position is based at the icipe Headquarters in Nairobi with frequent travel to neighbouring countries for field work. Position is available from 1st August 2010 for two years. Extension will be possible depending upon availability of funds.

  • Possession of a PhD degree in socio-economics obtained from a recognized University within the last two-three years.
  • Field experience in working with tsetse or other disease vectors or animal production would be an added advantage.

icipe: Developing an institutional programme for collaborative Organisational Capacity Development (OCD) in Africa.

Responsibilities
  • Under the leadership of the Director General, the activities of this position will develop a comprehensive project management training program for working together with regional organizations and advanced educational and research institutions in Africa and other parts of the world, to develop and implement innovative capacity development programmes in the area of plant, animal, human and environmental health that would benefit national policy makers, scientists, technical and extension staff, to meet national development goals. These include but are not limited to helping icipe undertake the following:
  • Resource mobilization especially fundraising activities to support continuity of the initiative beyond the 2 year project period as well as programme organization, partnership and networking to develop the Centre's capacity building and institutional development programme into a sustainable Unit.
  • Assess the capacity-strengthening needs of icipe partner institutions’; develop training programs and materials for this purpose; and conduct training for the selected partners to deliver on the long-term commitment of research and development.
  • Based on the training’s results, prepare a variety of innovative ways for effective utilization of human, financial and material resources in order to strengthen the quality of education provided in the higher education sector in Africa with the relevant and latest knowledge in icipe’s four research areas (human, animal, plant and environmental health).
  • Develop detailed procedures to increase the opportunities for the scientific community in Africa to acquire skills in the latest technologies to contribute more efficiently to the development of research capacity in universities and research institutions in their respective countries.
  • Work with African higher education and scientific research partners to implement effective and innovative capacity building and institutional development initiatives for technology acquisition and uptake through:
  • Enhancing capacity and professional development of regional and national organizations.
  • Improving interchange and interface of research between collaborating regional organizations and within those at the country level.
  • Establishing efficient result-oriented management, planning and monitoring of research institutions of higher education and research training in the region.
  • Develop a strategy and tools for monitoring the effectiveness of this capacity building programme.
  • Develop fundraising proposals to support continuity of the initiative beyond the project period.
  • Co-ordination of the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Science (ARPPIS) network, comprising the host institution (icipe) and the collaborating university partners. Specific tasks:
  • ARPPIS Academic Board (AAB): Liaison with University Vice Chancellors and appointed AAB Representatives in drafting agendas to guide policy making for future of ARPPIS.
  • Networking with MSc Sub-Regional Co-ordinators.
  • Co-ordination of icipe’s Board of Training & Postgraduate Studies (IBTPS) activities and meetings to provide guidance on handling academic and welfare matters of postgraduate scholars (both ARPPIS and DRIP).
  • Co-ordination of the training functions of the CB&ID Programme, including:
  • Managing the training activities of ARPPIS doctoral Scholars (selection, recruitment, annual evaluations, reports to donors).
  • Managing the Dissertation Research Internship Programme (DRIP) in collaboration with icipe scientists.
  • Overseeing the Research Internships (university trainees) and Attachments and Apprenticeships (tertiary college trainees) activities in liaison with relevant project heads.
Requirements
  • Be a holder of a PhD degree in Biological Science.
  • Possession of at least 5 Publications in Biological specialised science.
  • Proven track record in fundraising initiatives, organizational skill and ability to network extensively.
  • Have formal training in the management of training functions and project management techniques.
  • 5 Years post Doctorate experience in training management and delivery two of which at a supervisory level.
  • Computer literacy (e.g. MS Office).
  • Scientific leadership, organisational skills including financial management.
  • Excellent presentation and communication (oral and written) skills in English including training delivery skills, knowledge of French would be an added advantage.
  • Good interpersonal skills, be an active team leader able to maintain harmonious relationships in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Previous knowledge of financial management is essential.
  • Previous experience in a similar position would be a definite advantage.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
