VSF Germany Field Monitors - Veterinary (2 Positions) Job vacancies in Lokichoggio and Marsabit, Northern Kenya


Background:

VSF Germany is an international Non Governmental Organization, providing humanitarian aid and development assistance to pastoralists and vulnerable communities in areas where livestock is of importance. In the region, VSF Germany implements activities in southern Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

With support in animal health, agriculture, marketing, food safety but also with developing the capacity of communities and governmental institutions or initiating peace and conflict resolution we work towards food security and strengthened livelihoods of pastoralist communities.

VSF Germany seeks to recruit two qualified and well experienced Field Monitors (Specialized or with experience in Veterinary services) to support the implementation of projects one will be based in Lokichoggio and the other in Marsabit, Northern Kenya. These positions are Field based.

Key responsibilities:
  • Assist in collecting information and disseminating the same on the natural resources, drought preparedness, livestock diseases and livestock marketing & trade component.
  • Permanently monitor activities in the community and report to the Field Veterinarian.
  • Assist in mobilizing livestock traders for meetings.
  • Collect data on animal de-worming, vaccination campaigns, livestock and market access.
  • Monitor the veterinary activities within the Community in close collaboration with the implementing partners.
  • Assist in Mobilizing livestock traders for meetings
  • Co-ordinate and closely monitor the implementation of the Activities in the community.
  • Monitor and review all required and relevant records at the Community level, to ensure that they are accurately prepared and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Oversee the management of Vaccines and other medicines in the camp and Community ensuring proper standards of storage and utilization are being observed.
  • Follow up to ensure that the Field Officers are submitting the data forms accurately filled and promptly.
  • Prepare and submit weekly reports on the Veterinary activities in the Community.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills required
  • Diploma in Animal Health or its equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of community work experience.
  • Past Veterinary work Experience is desirable.
  • Past experience in the same position or in community work/mobilization preferably with a humanitarian or International NGO in area of Veterinary.
  • Good Interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to understand and speak the local language.
  • Previous field level experience desirable.
  • A team player with good organizational skills.

Kennel Vet Technician Job in Naivasha Kenya



Title: Kennel Vet Technician

Reports to: Kennel Manager

Duration: Fulltime

Location: Naivasha, Kenya

Position Purpose: To provide assistance in oversight and management of the day-to-day care and maintenance of 100+ working service dogs at a Naivasha-based kennel.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Oversight and management in caring for K-9 dogs (water, feeding, grooming)
  • Coordinate/manage health and well-being of K-9s (whelping, veterinary visits, innoculations, deworming, tick and flea control, weight assessment)
  • Manage medical/medicine inventories and equipment.
  • Maintain diaries and records.
  • Teach basic dog care clinics.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Requirements and Credentials:

Skills & Knowledge:
  • demonstrated interest and ability in caring and working with dogs
  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • ability to understand and speak basic English, follow instructions, and work cooperatively and effectively with others.
  • interest and ability in working with K-9 dogs
Experience:
  • 5 years of veterinary clinic experience
Education:
  • University or relevant courses.
  • Form 4 graduate, with science courses and experience.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
Salary Scale: 11,000/- to 20,000/-

Africa Harvest Jobs in Kenya: Field Project Coordinator and Internship Opportunity

The Foundation is seeking to recruit a dynamic person to the positions of Field Project Coordinator based in Kitui who will also serve as an Assistant Project Manager. The successful candidate will be offered an initial two year contract to coordinate the project implementation in Kitui, Nzaui and Makueni districts in Eastern Province.
Key Responsibility
Reporting to the Project Manager, within the Technology Deployment Programme, the Field Coordinator’s responsibilities will include the following:

  • Mobilizing smallholder farmers into operational groups and building their capacity in identified gaps
  • Supporting adoption of horticulture and traditional crops innovations and technologies- e.g. tissue culture banana, sorghum, millets and on-farm trees
  • Promoting improvement of soil fertility and productivity at community and farm levels through use of manure and soil fertility enhancing crops
  • Promoting improvement of water conservation, harvesting and management through appropriate techniques
  • Supporting short cycle livestock production for dairy goats, sheep and poultry
  • Data collection, compiling reports and submitting same to the project manager
  • Networking with diverse stakeholders
Academic Qualifications and Experience
  • A degree in agriculture, veterinary, science or any other relevant field
  • Five year hands on experience implementing projects with similar scope
  • Team player, self driven, strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good organizational and management skills.
  • High level of computer literacy.
  • Networking and people skills
  • Excellent oral and writing skills

icipe Jobs in Kenya: Senior Project Officer


icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in the environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 300 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan.

icipe seeks to recruit a young and highly motivated Senior Project Officer to work in the Animal Health Division on development and validation of tsetse repellent technologies.

The position is based at the icipe Headquarters in Nairobi with frequent travel to neighbouring countries for field work.

Requirements
  • Preferably Masters Degree in Veterinary Medicine
  • BSc with 5 years relevant experience are welcome to apply.
  • Experience in tropical diseases like trypanosomiasis and tick borne diseases will be an added advantage.
  • 2 years technical experience in a research institute.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge, competence and expertise in field based research particularly research methodology, analytical tools, statistical software.
  • Proficient in computer, dbase and spreadsheets software
  • Proven ability to work efficiently in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment with biological research scientists, extension specialists and Government and private sector.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures health and safety, experiments and survey procedures, laboratory/ equipment management.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) proven ability to communicate scientific concepts orally and in simplified manuals for farmers.
  • Fluency in both written and oral English and Swahili is required
  • Driving license a must with proven accident free driving
Responsibilities
  • Undertake a range of complex experiments as prescribed by Scientist(s) within icipe’s scientific procedures and guidelines.
  • Participate in the development of research methods/techniques in collaboration with Post Doctoral Fellows and Scientist(s).
  • Carry out field work e.g. surveys, sampling, planning etc as prescribed by Scientist(s) within icipe’s scientific procedures and guidelines.
  • Collect and record raw data of scientific research results into a database and carryout data analysis for publication.
  • Maintain excellent relations/rapport with farming communities involved in R& D work
  • Organise / sort out all logistics for field / laboratory work
  • Co-ordinate and plan the duties of research assistant and other technical staff.
  • Assist in capacity building of farmers, extension staff and other technical staff (orgnaise farmer training workshops and other farmer-out reach field events etc).
  • Operate and ensure maintenance of laboratory and field equipment
  • Ensure adequate supplies of laboratory/field materials are available for project use, maintain inventories and administer requisitions for Scientist(s) approval.
Candidate must be willing to travel to other project countries.
