Shining Hope for Communities Community Programs Officer Job in Kibera Nairobi Kenya


Shining Hope for Communities has developed an innovative, community-driven model to combat inter-generational cycles of poverty and gender inequality in Nairobi’s Kibera slum. We link free schools for girls to accessible social services for all. In August 2009, we founded The Kibera School for Girls, the first entirely free school for girls in Kibera. The second step of our model provides the community-at-large with tangible benefits through a community center adjacent to the school. The unique services we offer include sanitary eco-toilets, a library and cyber café, gender violence support, microenterprise for HIV positive women, a youth center, access to water, business and literacy training, and hundreds of jobs. 
We also operate the Johanna Justin-Jinich Community Clinic, which specializes in primary care and maternal health. By investing in health and economic success through a school for girls, we demonstrate that benefitting women benefits the whole community, cultivating a community ethos that makes women respected members of society.
Shining Hope for Communities invites applications from suitably qualified applicants to fill the following vacant positions:-
Reports to: Kibera Program Manager
Hours: Monday- Friday, 8am to 5pm, 2 Saturdays a month
 Key responsibilities will include:Lead the implementation, development, and growth of all community programs (Youth, HIV+ Women Support Program, Adult Education , Economic Empowerment, Water & Sanitation, Community Library and Cyber Cafe). Manage program development and strategic growth of all community programs to ensure all programs meet targets and goals Organize community events Manage reporting and impact measurement for all programs Recruit, manage, train, and provide support for community programs staff Oversee budget request and approval process Develop and execute a marketing plan for community programs with goal of increasing community participation. Work with parents and community stakeholders to ensure effectivenessMinimum 5 years experience working in community development Minimum 3 years work experience in a leadership position focused on community development with management responsibilitiesPassion for Shining Hope’s mission and work and ability to work comfortably in the Kibera slums. Program design and evaluation experience Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities; comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and committed to meeting deadlines and creating and improving processes. Willingness to take ownership of projects and significantly drive the progress of the SHOFCO’s community programs Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with myriad stakeholders at all levels.Interested applicants should send their applications together with a detailed CV to the HR Manager, jobs@shininghopeforcommunities.org

 Position Title: Community Development Officer (CDO)
Duty Station: Lodwar, Turkana, Kenya
 Duration: 1 year, renewable
 
Role: The CDO support the Project Manager by providing technical support and implementation of the VSF Belgium development and emergency projects in Turkana County especially focusing strengthening the resilience of communities in Turkana through food security projects, animal production, development and operationalization of community disaster risk reduction (CDRR) plans, ensuring development of alternative livelihoods for target vulnerable communities, working with local level CBOs and NGOs, Pastoral field schools (PFS), Village Community Banking (VICOBA), Village Land Use Planning Committees (VLUPs) among others. Work closely with local government and relevant technical government departments to ensure project alignment with county strategies and quality control The holder of this position will be required to travel extensively to project sites located in Turkana South, East, Central and Loima districts of Turkana County and parts of Samburu County.

Key Responsibilities
 

Client counselling:  Provide comprehensive client counselling on reproductive health, other various services and other health matters.Client satisfaction:  Taking necessary steps to ensure that all centre clients are treated with sensitivity, respect, and consideration.  If complaints are raised, be able to effectively manage and resolve them.  Refer promptly to the Centre manager fort management if client complaint continues or is of a serious magnitude.Maintaining the highest possible standard of client care by providing quality care to all clients.Implementing a smooth, efficient client flow which will reduce clients waiting time.Monitoring and evaluating client care continuously and recommending adjustments as necessary.Educating and giving information to clients and their relatives regarding family planning and other health related issues.Supplies Management:  Taking steps to ensure that stock is dispensed and counted accurately, that stock cards are updated continuously and waste and spoilage of stock (ie expired stock) and stock outs is minimised.  Ensure full participation in stock counting and ordering activities at the centre (including outreach, the laboratory, the main store and dispensing cupboard supplies). Timely alerting of the centre manager of low stock or discrepancies in stock counts / orders received.Security and building maintenance:  Taking necessary steps to ensure that risk to all Marie Stopes Kenya assets are minimised, and that the centre building and vehicle are maintained in a sound and secure way.a)  Client treatment: All nursing and midwifery staff shall:Administer drugs prescribed in the correct dose, the correct route and at the correct strength for the client, gives injections in a safe manner using aseptic techniqueAssists with Norplant & IUD insertion, MVA procedure, Pap Smear, Tubal Ligation and Vasectomy procedures. (Registered Midwives/Comprehensive Nurses may be trained to insert IUD, Norplant, VCT and to conduct MVA procedure)Provides antenatal, post natal care, emergency deliveries (midwives), immunisationFollows STI treatment protocols correctlyAchieve high uptake of appropriate FP methods by clients following counsellingTaking necessary steps to ensure that the highest standards of reproductive health and family planning services are achieved, as laid down in the Marie Stopes Partnership Manual (including HIV/AIDS services) .Nurse providers should conduct weekly checking of essential equipment and promptly inform the centre manager of their current status, and follow up repairs or maintenance required of equipment.Carrying out all nursing procedures (as laid down in the procedure manual).Maintaining high standards of cleanliness at the centre.Practicing every known measure of infection prevention.Storing sterile instruments according to the protocol.Preparation of theatre/ labour ward for specified procedures.Maintaining instruments and equipments e.g. to avoid rusty items.Ordering medical supplies in good time to avoid shortage.Ensuring proper storage of medical supplies.Assisting the doctor in relevant procedures.Nurse providers are responsible for the cleaning and sterilisation of instruments and supplies (gauze and cotton wool) in the Centre and Outreach.c) Vocal Local, Infection Prevention, Emergency Preparedness:With guidance from the Centre Manager, all nurse providers must familiarise themselves with Marie Stopes Kenya protocols and actively implement all the necessary tasks to achieve the highest standards.  4. Record Keeping and Reporting
a) Organisation’s Clients:  Ensure that company clients are attended to promptly; claim forms are completed accurately with correct costs calculated on forms.
b) Record keeping and reporting:  Taking necessary steps to ensure that accurate records are kept in the Centre, and that timely accurate reports are submitted to the Centre Manager. All records handled by the nurse provider including client register, client cards, receipt books, must be updated daily and have complete details.  Records at the centre are the property of MSK, client records must be kept confidential at all times.  Prices charged to clients must be as per MSK price list.Ensuring confidentiality of centre records.Maintaining accurate records.Collecting of data and production of reports as needed by Operations/Financial Team.c) Budgetary control: Taking responsibility for costs to be contained within the approved annual budget.  Striving for income from services to meet or exceed budgeted targets.
 Community Outreach: Nurses and midwives will participate fully on both centre and outreach activities on a rotational basis. With the aim to support EAC’s vision, mission, values and strategic goals the EAC Secretariat has developed a Communication Policy & Strategy. 

One of the main objectives is to enhance the brand image of the EAC and to reinforce the internal and external communications efforts. As a means of achieving this, the EAC Corporate Communications Department and GIZ have embarked jointly to take a holistic approach to develop a Design Guide by carrying out an entire branding project. We are therefore looking for a consultant (s) to plan and execute such a project.
The Consultant (s) should have:At least a masters degree in Communications, International Marketing or a related field from a recognised university/institution.Minimum 15 years work experience in strategic communications and corporate branding both on a strategic and an operational level.A solid experience working with employer branding in large organisations.Experience in carrying out a whole branding project from planning and execution to implementation in a corporate/public or intergovernmental entity is a MUST.Strong project management skills, with the ability to execute in a structured manner.Excellent communication and presentation skills.Experience working with the survey tool SurveyMonkey is an added advantage.The estimated duration of the assignment is a maximum of 180 working days starting from July 2013 to December 2014. The assignment requires the consultant(s) to be on-site at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania in regular and frequent intervals.
The EAC-GIZ program is asking interested consultants to submit a short (5 pages maximum) technical proposal as well as a separate financial proposal. Interested consultant(s) must provide information indicating that they are qualified to perform the services (brochures, description of similar assignments, experience in similar conditions, availability of appropriate skills among staff, etc.). Experts may constitute joint-ventures to enhance their chances of qualification.
The proposal should also indicate the qualifications and their ability to undertake the project within the time frame identified.
Eligibility criteria, establishment of the short-list and the selection procedure shall be in accordance with GIZ Procurement Rules and Procedures.

1. At least a Diploma in General Agriculture, Organic Agriculture, Sustainable Agriculture from a recognized Institution.
2. At least three years experience working with rural communities in development and agro-marketing

RIDEP is currently working only in Tharaka-Nithi County and its office is located in Marimanti. The Community Development Facilitator will be stationed in the field within Tharaka Sub-County (nearer to the target communities)

To re-design the approach to hygiene promotion to utilize a Behavior Change Communication (BCC) approach. Develop tools and processes to identify triggers and barrier to behavior change for School, Health Centre and community project. Create key messages and selection of communication channels to promote behavior change. Developing training modules for the capacity building of the Water Committee Associations. Use the WCAs modules to train the WCAs and adapt the modules if necessary. Participates in the capacity building support to the Water Committees Associations, WASH committees, schools teachers and other relevant local authorities and community groups, as required by the project.
Under the supervision of Tdh WASH Project Manager and in close collaboration with the MOPH and MOW of Lagdera district, she/he is responsible for developing IEC material with a BCC approach, give guidance to improve the hygiene promotion sessions,  developing modules for WCAs capacity building and training the WCAs.Develops modules for training and capacity building of the Water Associations committees.Participates in the capacity building support to the Water Committees Associations, WASH committees, schools teachers and other relevant local authorities and community groups, as required by the project.Develops or improve already existing tools to improve the WASH sensitization activities. Creates new IEC materials for the schools, health centres and community with the Behavior Change Communication (BCC) approach Test these IEC materials and adapt them if necessaryEnsures that activities are appropriately proposed, when deemed necessary, amendments to the WASH strategy, in consultation with the WASH PM. Creates new IEC materials for the schools, health centres and community with the Behavior Change Communication (BCC) approach Test these IEC materials and adapt them if necessaryEnsures that activities are appropriately proposed, when deemed necessary, amendments to the WASH strategy, in consultation with the WASH PM. In collaboration with the WASH PM, participates in designing strategies and objectives for improved support to beneficiaries and contribute actively in its monitoring, evaluation and revision.Develops or improve already existing tools to improve the WASH sensitization activities.Develops or improve already existing tools to improve the monitoring of WASH structures.Participates in the capacity building support to the Water Committees Associations, WASH committees, schools teachers and other relevant local authorities and community groups, as required by the project.Participates in the development of database tools and supervises field testing of the toolsIn a participatory manner identifies, mobilizes and trains community members and other actors to encourage their participation in different aspects of the project implementation and development.Master in anthropology, behavior change or communication with an experience in water sanitation or social marketing in the field with an NGO especially in Kenya. Partnership sensitive and capacity building approach.At least 3 years’ field experience working with government or NGOs in WASH sector as community hygiene promotion expert or Water Committee Associations trainers.Fluent in English, Swahili (Somali an asset)Capacity and experiences to train Water Committee AssociationsWorking knowledge of MS Office, expertise in Excel, experience in HPinfo, email system.Capable of working in remote placesKnowledge of the NGO cycle project.Knowledge of the community culture and context in the Lagdera DistrictExperience in data base collection and reportingAble to work independently with minimal supportWilling to work in difficult environment with limited social servicesTo be accountable for activities entrusted to he/rPunctual, efficient and capable to perform under pressureQualified and interested candidates should submit a covering letter, CV and references.
