Position Reports To: Quality Control Manager

Position Purpose:

To outline the key areas of responsibilities of the personnel in order to ensure result oriented undertaking in the department.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks
  • Maintain proper records and documents in the microbiology laboratory.
  • Update of the standard operating procedure of the microbiology section under the guidance of Quality control manager
  • Carry out routine microbial testing of all incoming natural raw materials and finished products.
  • Perform challenge test for the preservatives used in the finished products and have proper documentation of the same.
  • Ensure that daily, monthly calibration of microbiology instruments and equipments are done promptly and proper documents kept in place.
  • Perform sub-culturing of the live mother cultures periodically in accordance with the operation policies.
  • Maintain proper inventory of the instruments and equipments of microbiology section.
  • Responsible for environmental monitoring in the factory in accordance with the policy procedures.
  • Carry out disinfectants activity evaluation to help avoid microbial resistant in the premises and recommend appropriate disinfectant rotational schedule for the premises.
  • Responsible for daily calibration of pH meter and analytical balances in the chemical laboratory.
  • Be involved in new methods development and validation of processes as per validation policy.
  • Responsible for effluent analysis and proper reporting of the results and ensuring compliance to the regulatory authority standards.
  • Responsible for microbial and chemical analysis of purified water for pharmaceutical use.
Performance Measurements
  • Reports are and timely for authorization of further processing or release of finished products.
  • Effective implementation of quality department policies and procedures in accordance with established principles, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Safeguarding and preserving company assets.
  • Routine microbiological work is done effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintain existence of positive working relations in quality control personnel.
Qualification Required

Education/Certification: Diploma or higher diploma microbiology related field

Required Knowledge: knowledge of good laboratory practices and procedures.

Experienced Required:
  • Broad based knowledge of the pharmaceutical Quality control/assurance practices
  • Hand on experience in micro biology laboratory
Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent team-work skills
  • Meeting of tight schedules
  • Able to organize, coordinate and direct projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Bio-resource Innovations Network for Eastern Africa Development (Bio-Innovate) seeks to recruit a highly competent and dynamic Assistant Program Manager.

Bio-Innovate Program is a newly established multidisciplinary competitive funding mechanism, for biosciences and product oriented innovation activities in Eastern Africa, through the Bioresources Innovation Fund, supporting applications for regional, multi-disciplinary innovation projects in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

The Bio-innovate Program is supported by a grant SEK 90m (USD 12m) from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The Bio-Innovate niche is characterized by a focus on the applications of bio-resource innovations, to support sustainable growth and transformation of the agricultural and environmental sub-sectors, from primary production to value addition, while enhancing adaptability to climatic change and strengthening innovation policy.

The program has four thematic areas (crop production, adaptability and diversification; environmental protection and management; technology incubation; and bioresources innovation policy analysis), all of which are closely connected to and build on AU/NEPAD Consolidated Plan of Action for Africa’s Science and Technology.

Bio-Innovate Program will focus on delivering new products through bioscience innovation systems involving a broad range of actors, including scientists, private sector, policy makers, NGOs and other practitioners.

It will use modern biosciences to improve agriculture and conserve the environment through improving crop productivity and resilience to climate change in small-scale farming systems; improving the efficiency of the agro-processing industry to add value to local bio-resources.

The program will also develop sound policies for commercializing products from biosciences research; and investigate innovative delivery systems.

Bio-Innovate Program is managed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). It is co-located on ILRI’s Nairobi campus with the BecA -ILRI Hub, a biosciences research platform that is part of AU/NEPAD’s Africa Biosciences Initiative.

Bio-Innovate Program seeks to recruit a dynamic Assistant Program Manager who will be part of a small Program Management Team and will in particular involve in ensuring that adequate program and projects management systems are established and maintained.

The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a Research Technician whose key responsibilities will be as follows:

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research under supervision of research scientists;
  • Provide technical support to the aflatoxin research team, especially on mycotoxin diagnostics and fungal characterization
  • Establishment and curation of databases containing overall project data;
  • Culturing and characterization of fungal isolates;
  • Genotyping and sequence analysis;
  • Use of HPLC for identification of mycotoxins;
  • Implement a barcoding system for sample and information storage;
  • Near Infrared Spectroscopy for identification of fungal contamination and grain traits;
  • Ensure observation of good laboratory practice including proper maintenance of equipment;
  • Prepare purchase requisition of consumable items
  • Assist in coordination of permit acquisition with the institute’s health and safety office
Requirements
  • A Master’s degree in Biological Sciences with 3 years experience or equivalent, or Bachelor of Science degree or Higher National Diploma in Biomedical Sciences with 5 years experience.
  • Experience in a research environment, specifically including HPLC, ELISA and microbiology
  • Experience with fungal culturing and characterization, NIR, and molecular biology is a plus.
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office programs is essential
  • Knowledge of MS Access and bioinformatics would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team setting.
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken.
  • Experience with Aspergillus flavus in the context of maize;

  • Play a leading role in the establishment and application of a mycotoxin diagnostics facility in Kenya;
  • Liaise closely with collaborators in Kenya, Tanzania, Australia and USA;
  • Conduct molecular and morphological characterization of Aspergillus species;
  • Identify genetic sources of reduced susceptibility to aflatoxin accumulation in maize.
Requirements
  • A PhD degree obtained no more than 5 years ago in the field of plant genetics, plant pathology and/or mycology;
  • Experience working with mycotoxins and characterizing fungi;
  • Experience with molecular biology, including working knowledge of standard tools for sequence characterization;
  • Experience working in an advanced biotechnology research group;
  • Proficiency with standard statistical analysis;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to perform in a multicultural research environment as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Excellent written and spoken English;

RTI International Technical Program Manager - IRS Project Job in Kenya

RTI International is currently seeking qualified candidates for the Technical Program Manager (TPM) position to be based at the Nairobi Regional office.

Overall Purpose:

In collaboration with each country Chief of Party (COP), and other relevant RTI staff, serves as a Technical Program Manager for IRS country programs.

This is essentially a coordinative and technical advisory position, with considerable responsibility for helping the COP ensure country program success. It requires close and continuous collaboration and communication with the COP to be effective.

Essential Duties:
  • Key deliverables on which the TPM works and has significant responsibility include: Annual work plans and associated budgets, End of Spray reports, Semi-Annual and Annual Reports.
  • The TPM works with COP on annual work plan development and ensures that proposed activities are in line with PMI MOP and MOH/NMCP agreements as well as RTI priorities
  • Based on country program input, plays a key role in ensuring the timely submission of satisfactory country semi-annual reports, and end of spray reports as required under the IRS contract
  • Works with M&E Manager and COP to design impact assessments, and qualitative/quantitative surveys (i.e., role of gender/superstition in the acceptance of IRS spraying of the household).
  • Monitors, and reports to RTI and USAID Washington on progress of each country program on a weekly basis, and keeps track of all actions required in the IRS countdown calendar.
  • In partnership with the COP, and based on inputs from the country, responds as needed to USAID Washington and mission requests for information
  • Assists PAS in budget development and identifies areas of concern. Assists PAS in monitoring budget consumption and making projections to ensure project is completed within budget
  • Work with RTI procurement officer and COP to ensure accurate and timely procurement of insecticide and other IRS commodities (country approvals are in place, on-time arrival and order is according to technical specs).
  • Assists COP as needed, to prepare scopes of work and budgets for consultants and subcontractors, based on country specifications, and provides follow up for their approval.
  • Provide short-term technical assistance to countries to assist COP in planning, implementation, M&E, and/or closing of spray operations as necessary.
  • Manage timely scheduling and execution of entomological activities and other subcontracts to ensure scopes of work are completed satisfactorily.
  • Advise the Project Director and Deputy of progress and challenges.
  • Available to fill in for COPs as directed on interim basis as needed
Minimum Required Education & Experience:
  • Masters degree in public health, biology, entomology, environmental sciences or related field plus 6 years of experience in international health.
  • Prior experience serving in a long-term resident position or in a project management role preferred. Experience in home office backstopping also considered.
  • Prior work experience in Africa is preferred.
  • Local Nationals or Residents with valid work permit preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in financial management, human resources, logistics /operations and other administrative tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience working on USAID-funded projects and in-depth knowledge of USAID rules and regulations is required.
  • Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks and work collaboratively with others.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability writing technical reports or proposals.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with all levels of internal and external clients/ stakeholders.
  • Foreign language fluency in French, Portuguese, or Kiswahili preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English.
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Willingness to travel frequently, sometimes for extended periods.
