Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities for the intern will include: supporting programme officers in their day to day operations, supporting logistical arrangements for forums, events and meetings

Essential Skills and Attributes

Background
FAWE is a pan-African Non Governmental Organisation founded in 1992 to promote girls’ and women’s education in sub-Saharan Africa in line with Education for All. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, FAWE has a network of 35 National Chapters operating across Africa. FAWE’s mission is to promote gender equity and equality in education in Africa by fostering positive policies, practices and attitudes towards girls’ education. The goal of the organisation is to increase access and retention as well as improve the quality of education for all girls within the school system and for women in universities. In its 2008-2012 Strategic Plan, FAWE instituted an internship programme to encourage young graduates and university students who and are interested in gaining practical experience in their field of study. Interns provide support to specific FAWE units according to identified needs.
FAWE encourages the placement of interns at its Regional Secretariat in Nairobi and in National Chapter Secretariats. Interns may be of any nationality or gender as long as the engagement is mutually beneficial to the intern and the requesting organisational unit, and thus to FAWE.
CONFERENCE ASSISTANT
Responsibility
  • Work out a budget for the entire event for discussion with the PO and subsequently, senior managers
  • Ensuring all insurance, legal, health and safety obligations are available for participants
  • Make available all the necessary equipment required by the participants and speakers for the conference
  • Select and book a suitable venue according to the requirements of FAWE and in accordance to the type of conference.
  • Organisation of accommodation and catering including the selection of menus
  • Work closely with the administrator to ensure all documents are translated and deadlines are respected
  • Arrangements for interpretation (if necessary) and secretarial services
  • Coordinating with identified speakers/facilitators/resource persons,
  • Work closely with the communication unit to ensure post-event activities – resolutions, contact with delegates and distributing of conference-related literature, analysing feedback from the participants/delegates
  • Coordinating venue management, stand designers (if the event involves an exhibition) contractors and equipment hire
  • Planning possible recreation, entertainment programs, gala dinners, excursions, etc.
  • Preparing participant/delegate packages, folders, brochures, posters, pictures and papers
  • Liaising with the Communication Unit, the PO, the NC and designers to create an appropriate brand and logo suitable for the theme of the workshop
  • Prepare all necessary travel tasks – ticketing, local transportation, VIP services visas etc to facilitate travel for participants.
  • To be physically present throughout the entire event to handle participants’ needs and queries and to make sure that the event runs smoothly
  • Responsible for the smooth management of dismantling and removal of all items, structures, equipment brought in for the event from the origin
Required qualifications and competencies
The internship is open to students, recent graduates or new entrants into a particular field. Applicants should:
  • Recent graduate or enrolment in a graduate-level degree programme in a development related field such as Education, economics, business administration, sociology, programme/project management or related field. Demonstrated interest in the field of development
  • Past experience in conference/meeting planning and event management
  • Have strong speaking and writing skills in English. French will be an added advantage.
  • Be able to follow instructions, but also work independently
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of multiple stakeholders

KEMRI ICT Intern Career Opportunity in Kenya


The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in collaboration with the University of Washington is conducting a research study at multiple sites in Kenya.

As part of the international mission of the University of Washington to transfer technology and build capacity, a rotational fixed duration work/study (internship) position has been established in the research study and recruitment is currently underway.

This project invites application for the following position:

ICT Intern

Basic Qualification

At a minimum, the application should be an advanced student currently enrolled in a computing technology course in at least a 2-year course but preferably a 4-year course.

Specifically, the student should have basic training and proficiency in:
  • Basic Networking
  • Microsoft Server 2003 & 2008
  • Microsoft Access 2007
  • Microsoft Office 2007 Suite
  • Strong skills in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
  • Microsoft Windows Operating Systems (XP, Vista Pro)
  • Exposure to any UNIX based Operating System is desired but not required.
Duration
  • The internship will run for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 4 months.
Remuneration

This position has a fixed monthly stipend of Ksh. 5,000 per month for a time commitment of 25 hours per week (equivalent to 5 hours every day Monday to Friday).

Work Details

Working under the direct supervision of the Systems Administrator, the ICT intern will be responsible for general maintenance of defined computer equipment and for the resolution of identified technical problems, as well as undertaking general tasks which will promote the use of ICT across the research activities. The ICT intern’s job responsibilities will spread across ICT and Data support.

Key Responsibility
Reporting to the Project Manager, within the Technology Deployment Programme, the Field Coordinator’s responsibilities will include the following:

  • Mobilizing smallholder farmers into operational groups and building their capacity in identified gaps
  • Supporting adoption of horticulture and traditional crops innovations and technologies- e.g. tissue culture banana, sorghum, millets and on-farm trees
  • Promoting improvement of soil fertility and productivity at community and farm levels through use of manure and soil fertility enhancing crops
  • Promoting improvement of water conservation, harvesting and management through appropriate techniques
  • Supporting short cycle livestock production for dairy goats, sheep and poultry
  • Data collection, compiling reports and submitting same to the project manager

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Five year hands on experience implementing projects with similar scope

KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Research Programme is an internationally renowned health research Programme that is committed to developing research capacity in the East African Region.

1. Purpose of the Post: Programme officer
2. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conceptualizes, formulates effective management of Secretariat’s initiatives in the designated service area
  • Develops work-plans and oversees monitoring of programmes and projects
  • Develops fundraising proposals and carries out resource mobilization for the activities in the service area
  • Develops and sustains a strong Network of the Diocesan Programme Officers in the designated service to facilitate optimal impact at the grassroots
  • Networks and collaborates with other churches, government agencies, and NGOs in the particular service sector
  • Makes recommendations, as the need arises, to the Head of Commission for enhancing effectiveness of in the specific area of operation
3. Qualifications
  • Minimum requirement BA in a  Social Justice related degree graduates
  • Able to work under minimum supervision
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft excel,  general computer proficiency)
  • Be a person of high moral and social integrity
  • Have good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English
4. Performance Indicators: Extent of carrying out duties and responsibility in #3 above.

  • Is a committed Catholic, with good recommendation from own Parish Priest
