1. Corporate Communications Officer (Media Relations) 
JG ”6” 
One (1) Post
 
Reporting to the Corporate Communications Manager, the overall responsibility will be to ensure that the Service protects and promotes its image in a proper and coordinated way.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Devising and developing effective strategies to address live and potential issues which may impact on the organization’s imagein the short, medium and longer term proactive and reactive media relations.
  • Implementing an integrated media strategy, using both traditional and digital media channels to raise the Service’s profile across a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Developing and implementing media plans across the organization.
  • Advising on potential media angles for new streams of work.
  • Working with internal teams to develop key messaging for projects.
  • Media liaison (local, regional and international)
  • Gathering, development and disseminating accurate and timely information to the press locally, regionally and internationally.
  • Media placement and development of feature articles.
  • Generating media coverage.
  • Providing media training & coaching other employees to deliver key messages in media interviews and other public platforms.
  • Coordination of speech writing.
  • Handling issues/crises and acting as the primary contact for journalists.
  • Developing and maintaining strong, professional relationships with the press and media colleagues.
  • Working with the wider communications team to deliver a fully integrated communications program
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Diploma in Journalism for candidates with a non journalism degree.
  • At least three (3) years experience in a media house environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to copy, edit and maintain online technical content
  • Familiarity with the standards of writing, copy editing, and proof reading
  • Ability to identify, research and promote modern copy practice where required
  • Ability to improve written content with attention to detail
  • Experience and easy networking with subject matter experts to achieve a common goal
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • IT Skills
  • Having sound knowledge of media operations and contacts regionally, nationally and internationally
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
2. Corporate Communications Officer (Content Management) 
JG ”6” 
One (1) Post
Reporting to the Corporate Communications Manager, the overall responsibility will be to manage the look and feel of the Service’s website.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Development and implementation of the website & content management system strategy.
  • Develop a web gap analysis matrix for continuous improvement.
  • Create, develop and manage content for the organization’s web presence
  • Coordinate web projects across Divisions/Departments and with content authors.
  • Identify new content opportunities and ways to re-purpose existing content throughout the site.
  • Maintain a consistent look and feel throughout the website and any other sites.
  • Copy edit and proof read all web content.
  • Develop a system of collation of content from within and without the organization.
  • Keep current with emerging web technologies through relevant blogs, listservs and events.
  • Assure web based information is archived for future needs and reference.
  • Track and report on all site metrics.
  • Organize and support web writing training.
  • Carry out quality assurance checks on content.
  • Working with the wider Communications team to deliver a fully integrated communications program
  • Supporting and facilitating the Service in the use of latest social media such as twitter, facebook, you tube with a view to enhancing the Service’s mandate.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • At least three (3) years experience in managing content and production for high traffic websites.
  • Demonstrated ability to copy, edit and maintain online technical content
  • Familiarity with the standards of writing, copy editing, and proof reading
  • Ability to identify, research and promote modern copy practice where required
  • Ability to improve written content with severe attention to detail
  • Experience and ease networking with subject matter experts to achieve a common goal
  • Knowledge of multi-media content management
  • Demonstrated training and/or experience in applications of new information and communication technologies.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • IT Skills
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID
3. Corporate Communications Officer (Internal Communications)

One (1) Post
Reporting to the Corporate Communications Manager, the overall responsibility will be to ensure effective delivery of information and corporate communications to KWS staff.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Developing an understanding and awareness of the internal communications needs within the organization.
  • Owner of corporate internal communication process delivering timely and effective communication.
  • Building on existing networks and developing where required internal communications contacts throughout the organization e.g. change managers, focus groups and communications audits.
  • Delivering regular communication for all staff through a range of channels, ensuring ease of access to communications, clarity and consistency of messages, newsletters, e- bulletin, intranet, briefing material etc
  • Working with the wider communications team to deliver a fully integrated communications program.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • At least three (3) years experience within a media house environment, organization or communications agency
  • Have significant internal communications experience, including strategic development of internal communications plans and a track record of successful implementation
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and experience of communicating via offline channels
  • Familiarity with the standards of writing, copy editing, and proof reading
  • Ability to identify, research and promote modern copy practice where required
  • Ability to improve written content with severe attention to detail
  • Experience and ease networking with subject matter experts to achieve a common goal
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • IT Skills
  • Possession of valid Certificate of Good Conduct obtained from the CID

Mercy Corps Somalia Job Vacancies Re-Advertisement


Mercy Corps Somalia has the following vacancies for a proposed five-year $16-18 million program Youth Education and Empowerment for Somalia (YES) program to support formal and non-formal secondary education, vocational training, and economic opportunity for out-of-school youth in Somalia.

The non-formal and youth engagement component aims to increase job placements, salaries/wages and self-employment opportunities for Somali youth through the provision of market-driven skills training, business training and linkages to credit, business development support and job placement services.

The Specialist’s role is, primarily, to support the YES program and the country programs. It entails giving direction, setting appropriate standards, facilitation and training. It is not one of management or hands-on work in the field unless in a training context or when deployed to assist in establishing a response.

1. Chief of Party

Based in Hargeisa, Somaliland

Reporting to the Deputy Country Director, the CoP will provide overall leadership, management and strategic vision to the implementation of the YES program, managing staff and resources to ensure that the program meets its targets and deliverables on time and within budget.

The CoP will supervise key program staff and ensure accountability to Mercy Corps policies and U.S. government rules and regulations. He/she will be the primary program representative to donors, relevant government entities, partners, other implementers and external stakeholders.

The CoP will have MA/S or equivalent in social science, management, international development or other relevant field; 10-15 years of overseas experience including seven years in a senior management position; strong understanding of U.S. government compliance issues; strong written and oral communication skills in English, including report development, writing and editing; strong management skills, with good understanding of relevant cross-cultural issues; proven technical experience in education, infrastructure, and/or youth economic empowerment; and previous experience in Somalia preferable.

The successful CoP will combine exceptional management skills and experience in maintaining donor and partner relationships. He/She will have an outstanding ability to develop, implement and manage innovative programs within the current and future program structure of Mercy Corps in the region.

S/he will also have proven experience with cross-cultural team and capacity building, individual staff development, and strong mentoring skills. S/he will have demonstrated skills in managing programs in challenging insecure environments.

2. Deputy Chief of Party

Based in Garowe, Puntland

Reporting to the CoP. the Deputy Chief of Party (DCoP) is responsible for managing the Garowe satellite office of the Mercy Corps and YES program projects.

S/he supports the YES Chief of Party (CoP) in the strategic direction and overall supervision and successful implementation of the program, serving as the day-to-day manager of the program; Liaise and consult with USAID as delegated by the CoP; ensures sound administrative practices with regards to record keeping, compliance with USAID regulations, communications, etc.;

S/he ensures regular communication between Garowe Office and Bosaso and Galkacyo field offices, and Hargeisa head office. The DCoP will provide management and education technical expertise to assist the CoP in implementing a high-quality, results-oriented program to achieve the goals and objectives of the YES Program.

The DCoP will have MA/S or equivalent in Education (preferred), international development or other relevant field;7-10 of overseas education experience including three years in a senior management; experience in education development in conflict and/or transitional environment; previous DCoP experience in education, livelihoods or youth economic development programs; experience in effective gender integration in youth livelihoods programming; demonstrated ability and understanding of USAID rules and regulations.

The successful Deputy Chief of Party (DCoP) will possess in-depth expertise in education policy and practice, and experience in developing the capacity of transitional governments in education service provision.

Media Focus on Africa Foundation (MFA) is a not-for-profit communications for development organization registered and based in Nairobi, Kenya. It was founded on the premise that increased flows of quality information, reaching out to people living in Africa and beyond build societies that are better informed on priority issues of democratization and human development.

MFA promotes the concept of communication for development (C4D), as a means to empower people through carefully targeted and contextualised messages on key themes. MFA provides space for people to voice their aspirations on issues of leadership and governance, free and fair elections, as well as peace building, reconciliation and nationhood, mainstreaming gender and socio-economic justice.


MFA is currently looking for a Communications Intern. The functions for the role will include:
  • Work with staff to identify project components / activities that can be developed into stories that show the work of MFA is doing
  • Develop write ups for external communications including newsletters, websites, blogs etc
  • Assist in writing project documents including reports, proposals etc as maybe requested
  • Improve and manage the content on the organization’s social networking sites
  • Produce pictures for articles
Qualifications and skills

The ideal candidate will:
  • Have a university degree in social sciences, communications or journalism.
  • Must have good writing skills and show a keen interest in writing on issues around governance, democracy and community development
  • Have a good grasp of social networking /media and blogging
  • Be competent in basic computer skills including Microsoft Office packages
  • Follow any new development in social media
  • Have some knowledge on photography
  • Video camera skills while not necessary will be an added advantage.
  • Be full of energy, enthusiasm, and initiative and a good team player with humor.
  • Should be willing to develop the job profile into a fulltime engagement.

Qualifications and skills:
  • Minimum of a Diploma but a Degree would be preferred from a recognised Institution with a bias in Journalism /Marketing / Management / Business will be added advantage.
  • Must have prior experience in the Media Industry
  • Must have good IT skills.
  • Business writing skills
  • Communication and presentation skills
  • Must have good Customer relations and organisational skills with experience of planning and prioritising tasks and events
  • A Kenyan between 22 - 30 years, physically fit, able to work long hours.
  • Fluent in: English, Swahili, Somali, Arabic, Borana and Amharic.
