Primary Purpose: Building on the success and learning from East Africa Dairy Development ( EADD) Phase I, EADD II is an ambitious five-year program designed to help 136,000 smallholder farm families to achieve sustainably improved livelihoods - in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania by 2018. The vision of success for EADD is to transform the lives of resource-poor farming families with improved market access to a wealth-creating, robust dairy value chain that benefits all industry stakeholders.
 Position Description: Working closely with the TechnoServe Regional Program Manager, the Regional Business Analyst will be responsible for research and analysis of the East Africa dairy market/industry, Monitoring and Evaluation of Dairy Farmer Business Associations (DFBAs) performance, feedback and communication with internal and external stakeholders.Data collection, analysis and reportingLead research, preparation and communication of regular reports on the state, trends, and implications of the East Africa dairy market.Develop/maintain and update templates, databases, systems and processes for all data collection, analysis and reporting relating to DFBAs.Lead data collection, analysis, information management and sharing of market data for DFBAs with internal and external stakeholders.Develop and refine project M&E and performance management frameworksDevelop tools for monitoring and evaluating the capacity, management and operational systems and business performance of DFBAs.Develop and implement an appropriate methodology for evaluating TechnoServe progress towards project outcomes and goalsEnsure timely analysis and reporting of data to identify and communicate lessons-learned, and regular periodic presentation of data and analyses to project management in line with project decision-making and course correction processes.Help identify best practices, challenges and the cause of potential bottlenecks in implementation and advice project team.Develop and implement procedures for tracking the effectiveness of business advisory and other project advisory services.Ensure the use of appropriate information management systems enabling the transparent flow of business information within the project team.Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, statistics or international development or related studies required. Position Description: The Program Manager will be the TechoServe’s team leader in the EADD project, direct the implementation of all dairy related interventions and support the team to respond to client business needs. The job is at least 80% field based and entails the designing of business concepts and proposals specific to clients and industry needs. TechnoServe expects that this position will work closely with other team members to enhance clients’ benefits and leverage related interventions within TechnoServe. The position will also involve close collaboration with our development partners in the successful implementation of joint activities.Responsible for all deliverables under the EADD Project; this includes specific outputs and outcomes as provided for in the project proposal.Working in close collaboration with TechnoServe’s Regional Dairy Manager, contribute towards the overall effective delivery of outputs and outcomes under the Regional TechnoServe portfolio in the project.Collaborate closely with the Regional Manager in the implementation of dairy business activities to include timely execution of the annual plan and delivery on all targets of the country contract, development and tracking of project budget requirements.Work with the team to establish business development needs for existing and new client businesses, identify priority areas of involvement and develop implementation strategies.Oversee the delivery of business development and advisory services to client businesses in TechnoServe’s dairy portfolio (including dairy stakeholders) and develop interventions that address specific needs of client businesses to position them for growth.Develop effective and strong working relationships with partners, identify areas of collaboration, be involved in the project planning and make regular presentations to high-level audiences, business owners, donors and policy-makers.Manage a team of Senior Business Advisors.Degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness Management or related studies. Thursday July 4th - Friday July 5th 2013TechnoServe in collaboration with U.S. based Partners in Food Solutions (PFS) is implementing a project named Solutions for African Food Enterprises (SAFE) with funding from USAID. The objective of SAFE is to increase competitiveness of the African food processing sector to expand availability of affordable and nutritious foods.This will be done through knowledge and technology transfer from volunteer experts from some of the world leading food and equipment manufacturers such as General Mills, Cargill, Royal DSM and Buhler.
In support of the mandatory fortification requirements of the above groups of foods by the Ministry of Health, SAFE is working with relevant authorities and stakeholders (such as Ministry of Health, Kenya Bureau of Standards, public universities and nutrition experts) to carry out a two day training workshop for small and medium processors of the above foods in order to equip them with the theoretical and practical knowhow that will enable them comply with the fortification regulations as required.
We are thus calling for food processors who would like to benefit from this training to send an application nominating one delegate from their company who they propose for the workshop. Training expenses will be covered under SAFE and reservations for the limited slots will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

Request for Applications

Applications are invited from Technical Consultants to develop a subscription based Herd Management Plan (HMP) for smallholder farmers. 

Background Information
Available literature on the Kenyan dairy sector mentions that 30% of milk produced is attributed to breed potential while the balance of 70% is attributed to animal husbandry which includes feeding, animal health and calf rearing among others. 

The current production status of the Kenyan dairy herd is low with an average of 4-5 liters a day or a lactation of 1,200 - 1,400 liters per year compared to over 5,000 liters per year in South Africa and 8,000L per year in Denmark.

The low figures in Kenya are attributed to poor animal health, breeds and feeding regimens, resulting from a myriad of constraints including poor access to information, low and inconsistent quality of feeds and extension services due to lack of adherence of standards and high cost of inputs. 

The high cost of inputs often limits the use of quality inputs which then have a negative impact on productivity.

Therefore, there is an opportunity to significantly improve productivity and profitability of dairy herds among smallholder farmers by developing and promoting a plan for organized routine and management practices, accomplished through disease and parasite control, reproduction and nutrition management. 

TechnoServe, a non-profit organization that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital and markets, is one of the implementing partners of the Kenya Market Assistance Program (MAP). 

This initiative is being implemented by a consortium of five organizations that include Kenya Market Trust (KMT) as the lead.   The Program aims to improve the performance of key market systems important to poor people in Kenya by addressing systemic constraints found in those market systems.  MAP is using the making markets work for the poor approach, which DFID has used to produce results in most of its private sector development work.  Overall, the objective of MAP will be measured against three key outcomes:Major systemic change achieved in 3 to 5 market systems, resulting in aggregate average growth of 10% per annum above overall growth of the economy, with the position of poor people (both men and women) improving at a rate significantly greater than this.At least 400,000 poor people (as producers, employees, etc) positively affected at the end of MAP in terms of new jobs created, and incomes for 100,000 people increase by 10%.A 30% increase in peer perceptions of partners’ effectiveness and in stakeholders’ awareness and understanding of the approach.TechnoServe is facilitating MAP Dairy Sector Strategy, to address systemic constraints related to service markets feeding into dairy and the processes of formalizing supply chains.  We are supporting interventions to address market failures towards increased adoption of breeding services (focus artificial insemination (AI)) and penetration of quality assured breed and animal health care services in the rural areas; stimulating a commercial fodder and concentrate feeds market to help farmers optimize the returns from their herds’ genetic potential; and supporting growth of cold supply chain through alternative investment models and strategies.
To achieve this Dairy Sector Strategy goal of increasing small holder productivity, MAP is facilitating a management program related to breeding, fodder and veterinary care for small holder farmers.
MAP is interested in piloting a comprehensive herd management program, integrating preventative medicine, quality assured breeding services (focus on AI), nutrition and scheduled herd visits to review and advice on herd performance. 

Statement of Purpose

MAP proposes to develop an integrative program of health, reproduction and nutrition management to address inputs and service delivery constraints in dairy farming.  

This will entail research into:Common diseases and health concerns in dairy, Minimum nutritional requirements,Standard breeding (AI) and veterinary services, and Identification of reputable input suppliers of breeding, vet-care and feeds.This information will guide the development of a subscription based Herd Management Plan for roll out by dairy hubs, agro-vets and other dairy service providers (including Breeding and Veterinary Service Providers and industry level organizations). The plan should ensure that farmers have access to vital inputs and services, to influence productivity and running of progressive and profitable farms.
The Herd Management Plan will include:  Individual farmers registering their animals into the program.Cost effective subscription based services for three levels of subscribers (Gold, Silver and Bronze).Total service delivery fees including treatment, supplies and transport costs factored in the subscription fees.The overall goal of the HMP is to: Improve sales and effectiveness of service delivery to small holder dairy farmers through an integrative program of health, reproduction and quality management.Improve sales of supplies and services to small holder farmers through a cost effective subscription plan.Improve operational efficiency among service providers including dairy hubs, AI and vet service providers.
