ACORD Online Communications Officer Job in Nairobi Kenya


ACORD (Agency for Cooperation and Research in Development) is a Pan African organisation working for social justice and development in Africa, through a combination of practical interventions on the ground, people-centred research and policy advocacy. ACORD has decentralised country offices in 17 African countries that work with communities on livelihoods and food sovereignty, HIV/AIDS and the right to health, peace building and women's rights. ACORD also campaigns and engages in advocacy on these issues at Pan African and international level.
Job Summary

Communications and dissemination lie at the heart of ACORD activities and Improving External Communication is one of the 4 pillars of the 2011-2015 ACORD strategic plan: ACORD will foster a robust communication strategy for ACORD's impact and added value underpinning its advocacy work and supporting fundraising.

ACORD relies heavily on its website - www.acordinternational.org - and social media pages to help the organisation achieve its mission with 3 main objectives for our online communication: e-campaigning, e-fundraising and e-resource for civil society and development practitioners; and the Online Communications Officer will be responsible for optimising all web pages and web tools for ACORD website (English and French sites) and other websites run by the organisation (e.g. www.askafricanow.org).

ACORD works with the media to disseminate information and contribute to changing attitudes and policies towards achieving social justice. 

The Online Communications Officer is co-responsible - with the Communication and Media Officer, for ensuring successful strategic online media partnerships and for increasing visibility in the online media at national and Pan African levels.

The position is designed for an experienced and self-motivated person with a background in online communication and marketing for international development organisations, and experience of working with a corporate brand. 

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Coordinator, the Online Communication Officer will be:
- responsible for managing all aspects of ACORD's digital strategy, including producing cross-channel content and managing online engagement and action.

Specifically:

1. Digital strategy and planning

Execute and enhance ACORD's digital strategyDevelop and execute strategies for building an engaged online communityDevelop and execute strategies for driving online and offline actions to advance ACORD's advocacy work in peace-building, women's rights, health and food securityWork with the rest of the Communications team to increase giving through our websites and social networking sitesEnsure consistency of brand application on all our web pagesTrack all relevant metrics and statistics to continuously improve our online communication impact2. Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of Programmes Operations & Development (HPOD), the Area Programme Manager is responsible for the strategic direction, leadership and operational management of the Burundi Area Programme and represents ACORD with the Government, Local and international partners in the country.

S/he will take the leading role in developing, overseeing, reviewing and monitoring of the Country strategy and in ensuring alignment with the ACORD Pan African strategic directions and overall thematic focus. The APM is responsible for developing and managing new and ongoing programming initiatives, actively leading the programme cycle management, and developing and managing partnerships.

The APM is also responsible for ensuring cross learning and sharing knowledge across the programme in all areas of programming as well as the national, regional and international policy advocacy and development issues.

S/he is responsible for overall financial and human resources management of the Area Programme as well as resource mobilization to ensure the smooth running and financial sustainability of the Area Programme.

The position will be based in ACORD Country Office in Bujumbura with regular visits to all project locations in Burundi.

Relationships with others

Under the supervision of the Head of Programmes Operations & Development (HPOD), he/she will work in collaboration with staff in various departments/units at the Secretariat: programming team (Pan-African program, thematic managers, monitoring/evaluation), partnership development, funding and communications, finance, human resources management and administration team.

Strategy development and implementation
Keep abreast on socio-economical and political developments in the Area Programme region and maintain close communication with the Secretariat on relevant critical factors and changes in the environmentProvide Leadership in the development and implementation of the ACORD Area Program strategy in line with the overall ACORD Strategic Plan and the context in the country/regionFacilitate the alignment of ACORD Area Program to strategic organizational thematic priorities and accountability mechanisms provided in the ACORD programming frameworkUndertake timely strategic review of the ACORD Area Program Strategy ensuring continued relevance in the rapidly changing environment
Representation

The ACORD Programming Strategy is organised around 4 themes:

i) Livelihoods with emphasis on Food Sovereignty,

ii) Conflict,

iii) Gender & other forms of discrimination and

iv) HIV/AIDS.

Strengthening of African civil society, citizens’ movements and governance is a cross-cutting theme in all ACORD’s work. ACORD implements twelve (12) thematically aligned country and Area Programmes in 17 countries across Africa. The Pan-African Program is managed from the ACORD Headquarters in Nairobi and has food sovereignty as the overarching theme.

Job Summary

This position is located in London and part of the ACORD Programming Team The aim is the implementation of the policy and advocacy plans designated for UK and Europe in general in close collaboration with the Pan-African programme team based in Nairobi.

Under the supervision of the Head of Policy & Advocacy, the Policy and Advocacy Advisor will play a role of leadership in development of agreed research and advocacy agenda in the UK and more broadly in EUROPE.

This includes research, intelligence gathering, media, partnership and alliance building, popular mass mobilisation and lobby work, as well as capacity building, learning and knowledge management.

The Policy and Advocacy Advisor shall lead this work in close collaboration with the rest of the policy and advocacy team in Nairobi, and in country and regional programmes across Africa.

Specific Responsibilities

A. Programming
In close collaboration with the Head of Policy & Advocacy, develop a clear strategy of positioning the agreed Africa Led policy and advocacy agenda in UK and Europe in general; and an implementation plan for its efficient delivery;Develop and implement an Annual Operational Plan and budget as part of the process of achieving the annual milestones towards the outcomes and objectives of the Pan-African Program;Keep abreast of Research and policies development and debates in Europe, relevant to the issues pertinent to ACORD , particularly issues of food sovereignty, gender justice, HIV and Aids, conflict and relevant linkages, and maintain a regular process of feeding the ACORD Pan-African Program Team and Area Programmes;Gather relevant intelligence on issues of food sovereignty and other themes so as to keep ACORD and its partners on top of the knowledge in the area and inform meaningfully the advocacy and lobby work;Develop and maintain sustained Partnerships and Alliances with Civil Society Organizations and Social Movements in the UK and Europe in general to advance the advocacy agenda of ACORD, especially those engaged on the same issues as ACORD, and support relevant links with the pan African movement;Develop and implement a lobbying and advocacy strategy and plans towards critical actors and “change makers” in the UK and Europe;In collaboration with the ACORD policy and advocacy team based in Nairobi, support the preparation of advocacy materials, including policy briefs, position papers, communication messages, position statement and any other material relevant to the ongoing campaign;Raise sustained public profile of ACORD and its agenda through creating, developing and maintaining good relations with the media in Europe;Be part of the CSOs and other social movements’ processes that are relevant to ACORD policy work and position ACORD agenda and partners. These would be in priority the UK and European food groups, the trade justice movement, gender justice, conflict and gender movement;Represent ACORD in UN ECOSSOC processes and others as an accredited member and keep abreast and position Acord agenda in the forum;Facilitate farmers, partners and staff of ACORD in Africa to engage in relevant processes, and policy debate in EuropeSeek advice and agreement from the Head of Policy & Advocacy in case of any significant conceptual or programming changes in the course of the implementation of the Pan-African Program;Inform the Head of Policy & Advocacy on other opportunities and possibilities that may arise at the implementation stage that are likely to strengthen program results.B. Funding and Management
In collaboration with the Partnership Development Unit, search the external environment and contribute to mobilize sufficient resources for implementation of the Pan-African Program through participation in concept and proposal writing;Manage the approved budget for the Pan-African programme allocated for the Northern area within the approved annual work plan (as agreed with the Head of Policy & Advocacy on an annual basis);Produce regular monthly update and bi-annual, annual narrative and financial report for the Pan-African Program.Support any additional donor reporting activities for the Pan-African program in compliance with agreements between ACORD and donors;Promote information sharing in relation to the food sovereignty initiative;C. Staff Supervision and Collaboration

The Policy and Advocacy Advisor is under the direct supervision of the Head of Policy & Advocacy.

Internal

The Policy and Advocacy Advisor will work closely with the Conflicts/Gender HIV & AIDS Thematic Managers, the Livelihoods Policy Advisor, the Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator and the Head of Programmes Operations & Development.

S/he shall also work closely with colleagues in other departments- Partnership development, Funding and Communications, Human Resources & Organisational Development and Finance.

External

The position holder will develop strong partnerships with Civil Society Organisations and Social Movements and link ACORD’s work to other Northern initiatives.

The nature and modalities of institutional relationships shall be adapted to ACORD’s existing organisational terms and processes, and contribute to the successful implementation of ACORD’s Pan African Programme on Food Sovereignty.

Job Requirements

Education/ Qualification and Experience

Minimum Qualification: Masters in Social Sciences, Sustainable Development or Agricultural Sciences; International Relations or Communication, Law or related field.

Experience:
Minimum of 4 years of experience in advocacy program in the NGO sector and social movement with international NGOs or institutions;Sustained experience in popular mobilization and Policy Advocacy work at International level especially on issues related to economic justice, other relevant issues;Relevant experience in policy analysis, lobbying and media work;Experience in networking and partnership and capacity in partnership management.Technical Expertise

We work in common cause with people who are poor and those who have been denied their rights to obtain social justice and development and be part of locally rooted citizen movements.

Job Summary

ACORD is a registered charity no.283302 in the UK with its Secretariat split between Nairobi and London.

ACORD is entirely grant funded with an average annual budget of GBP7 million per year.

ACORD was created as a consortium of non-governmental development organisations in Europe and Canada and the founding member organisations still provide the financial backbone of ACORD. Other important donors are institutional bilateral and multilateral donor agencies such as European Union and DFID, as well as other international NGOs.

The large majority of ACORD funds are in the form of project restricted grants from institutional donors. ACORD has set up an online donation facility. Work is also underway to explore fundraising from corporations.

The aim is to align the funding with the vision, mission, strategic priorities and operational needs of ACORD.

In the 2011-2015 strategic period particular emphasis is on enhancing the quality of funding; including through mobilising more unrestricted funding and moving beyond traditional funding sources to corporations, possibly the African diaspora, university students, and exploring the feasibility for ACORD to raise its own income. More emphasis on marketing will be required to support such innovative fundraising from non-traditional sources.

The Social Marketing Officer will focus on areas of work that are new to ACORD with a view to generate financial and ideological support for ACORD’s work on generating policy and practice changes. For the financial support, emphasis is on raising more unrestricted funding and funding from new sources.

Focus will be on fundraising from corporations; mobilising unrestricted funding through various ways, such as promoting the online donation facility of ACORD; and supporting related branding and marketing to enhance the visibility and image of ACORD. The position will also support the efficiency of ACORD’s advocacy campaigns.

He/she will collaborate extensively with colleagues across the organisation. The role of the Social
Marketing Officer falls within ACORD’s Partnership Development team and the post is reporting to the Partnership Development and Communications Advisor.

Responsibilities

Within the broad parameters set in ACORD’s approved global strategy 2011-2015, and related strategies and policies:
