Background

The UN Millennium Campaign is an inter-agency initiative that encourages and supports citizens' efforts to hold their governments to account for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Campaign’s Africa regional team works with citizens across six key constituencies - civil society organizations, parliamentarians, local authorities, youth, media and the private sector – in Africa. The Campaign focuses it work on MDGs 1-7 primarily but not exclusively) in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Africa, Rwanda, the DRC, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. The Campaign also has presence in Egypt.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the piloting of the telephone monitoring in 3 countries, one in east Africa, one in West Africa and one in Southern Africa, produce a final report and follow up on the implementation in 17 countries
  • Coordinate the packaging the UN MC Africa fundraising proposal in 4 countries
  • Develop 17 summary documents of the recent research papers on employment and gender issues in the 17 core African countries
  • Produce power point presentations on the state of MDGs in Africa in line with the Campaign's priority countries;
  • Set up and implement a monitoring and evaluation system to be rolled out across Africa working in conjunction with Programmes Associate, Deputy Director and regional heads.
  • Provide the necessary input for the coordination of the Kick Out Poverty and Stand Up Take Action campaigns in Africa.

  • Displays cultural, gender, regional, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;
  • Actively work towards continuing personal learning and development ;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and ability to communicate in French;
  • Proficiency in the use of the internet and PC applications, including Microsoft office and Windows XP;
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines;
  • Proven ability to (i) take initiative and work independently with limited supervision in a multicultural team environment (ii) prioritize and multi-task in an organization transcending national boundaries and multiple zones.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Degree or equivalent in Business or Public administration, Economics, political sciences, social sciences or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in researching, producing and analyzing development information;
  • 3 years of demonstrated experience in administering or supporting programmesl;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and advance knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages, experience in handling of web based management systems;
  • Excellent communication skills and good human relations skills, especially the ability to relate to a wide range of team members and partners from varying cultural backgrounds;
  • Progressive thinking; demonstrating initiative and responsibility, ability to achieve work outputs with limited supervision, and a pro-active, energetic and innovative approach to work;
  • Experience and knowledge of the UN system is an asset.
