Background

The UN Millennium Campaign is an inter-agency initiative that encourages and supports citizens' efforts to hold their governments to account for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Campaign’s Africa regional team works with citizens across six key constituencies - civil society organizations, parliamentarians, local authorities, youth, media and the private sector – in Africa. The Campaign focuses it work on MDGs 1-7 primarily but not exclusively) in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Africa, Rwanda, the DRC, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop an Africa-wide communication strategy for the Africa Campaign covering the 2010 – 2015 period.
  • Coordinate the UNMC Maternal Health caravan towards the AU Summit in 2010.
  • Coordinate the design and implementation of three marquee events prior to the UN General Assembly in September 2010.
  • Support the development of national communications strategies and media plans for the HLE and Stand Up in 10 priority countries.
  • Coordinate the pan-African media workshop in conjunction with IPS.
  • Create strategic partnerships with at least 10 media houses and mobilize their support communications-related activities across Africa.
  • Coordinate the development of a concept note and workplan for toll out local monitoring activities across Africa;
    Produce and send out a bi-monthly e-newsletter to enhance visibility of African campaign;
  • Produce and disseminate to identified target groups key campaign materials (Africa-wide petition, leaflets, T-shirts, banners, adverts etc).
  • Forge partnerships with one advertising agency and two cell-phone Companies to support local monitoring, SUTA and other communications initiatives.
  • Coordinate roll our local monitoring initiatives in two countries and produce publication featuring lessons learned for New York Summit.
  • In conjunction with New York team, coordinate Sukuma Africa event during the New York Summit.
  • Coordinate UNMC participation in national media awards in three countries.
  • Represent the Millennium Campaign in various high level meetings in Africa.
  • Coordinate the setting up of a media advisory group for UNMC in Africa
  • Monitor and document UNMC’s communications activities/ events and publish an end of contract report.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant field of media and communications.
  • Good understanding of the MDGs and their progress in the region with the ability to do media analyses;
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in communication/ public information is required at the national or international level.
  • Experience of the media and communications landscape in more than one country in Africa is an advantage.
  • Experience of strategic planning and campaigning. Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web based management systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and national language of the duty station. Other UN language knowledge is an asset.
    Excellent research, writing, and communications skills – verbal and written; proficiency in English; Proficient in the use of the internet and PCs, including Microsoft Office and Windows XP;
  • Proven ability to (i) work flexibly and independently with limited supervision in a multicultural team environment and deliver quality results against tight deadlines; (ii) multi-task in an organization transcending across national boundaries and multiple time zones.
  • Willingness to travel as and when required and willingness to work odd hours/ days.
