The Team Leader / Senior Agricultural Economist will lead a group of economists and other scientists within the Improving Markets Opportunities research team researching issues related to changing demand and market institutions in livestock products in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
The research utilizes multi-disciplinary tools from agricultural economics, agribusiness, innovation systems, and new institutional economics to elucidate the role of markets in promoting pro-poor growth.
Reporting to the Director of the Improving Market Opportunities Research Theme, the Team Leader will develop and implement a research programme in pro-poor development in collaboration with a range of local and international partners, focused on beyond-the-farm-gate elements of the livestock value chain, and manage day-to-day the team and donor-funded projects.

Key areas of research are expected to include:
- Quantitative analysis of livestock value chains to assess interventions that improve both farmer linkages to markets and the performance of the value chain itself, including outcomes for the poor
- Assessment of changing domestic and export demand for livestock products from developing countries and consequent opportunities for smallholder producers, input and service providers and value chain actors
- Identification of institutions and institutional interventions needed to enhance smallholder incomes and market access
- Methodological development to support ILRI- and CG-wide markets research platforms.
Requirements
- A Ph.D. or equivalent in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Agribusiness, or related discipline
- Proven analytical and research skills through a track record of scientific publications, policy documents and related correspondence.
- Experience of working in developing countries, especially sub-Saharan Africa, with strong preference given to livestock-related experience
- Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, and strong interpersonal and partnership management skills
- Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in other languages is an advantage);
- A passion for the generation of scientific knowledge that advances pro-poor development.
Person specifications
- Vision for advancing pro-poor development through knowledge generation;
- Strong research management experience, including fund-raising and management of staff and project resources, and experience in private sector agribusiness is desirable.
- Strong capabilities in econometric and other forms of quantitative analysis demonstrated in written outputs;
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: value chain analysis, supply chain modelling, agribusiness strategy, consumer demand analysis with focus on quality and safety, multi-sectoral modeling, and techniques from new institutional economics as applied in developing country environments;
Post location: The position is based at ILRI’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Extensive travel to other countries and regions will be required, particularly throughout Africa and South and Southeast Asia.
Position level: The position is Scientist/Research Level 3, dependent on qualifications and experience.
