The Geographic Information Systems Consultant will be under the overall Guidance of UNFPA Southern Sudan Office Deputy Representative; the Geographic Information Systems Consultant will carry out the following duties and responsibilities and directly report to the Population & Development Officer. The Consultant shall be working very closely with the SSCCSE staff mainly the Department of Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing & Cartography.
Key Responsibilities:
Guide and assist the GIS/RS & Cartography Department in planning and executing technical tasks that include:
- Keeping project documentation up to date
- Provide input and guidance in the overall operational planning and operations of the Department within SSCCSE
- Arrange and maintain data sets (vector and raster) – including metadata
- Serve as the link between the mapping and related SSCCSE statistical/demographic and UNFPA Population Census Support Unit activities
- Ensure good operation and maintenance of GIS lab hardware and software
- Assist in planning, map production and map reading training to the staff of GIS/RS & Cartography Department.
- Assist and provide guidance on analysis and map product development based on census and other statistical variables
- Provide methodology and ‘hands-on’ practical guidance in planning, managing and collecting new field data
- Assist with hands-on practical data preparation and the integrating of newly collected field data, improving existing data layers
- Assist in marketing the use of mapping data for government authorities through presentations
- Play an active role in the Southern Sudan geo-information society and assist in building GIS and mapping capacity and Geospatial Data Infrastructure.

- Ability to perform work on confidential nature and handle a large volume of work;
- Exposure to an international environment with UN/NGO/Government or a Multilateral organisation/Institution; and Knowledge working with UN agencies, NGOs and humanitarian partners is an asset
Qualifications:
Education: University Degree in Geography and Post-Graduate level qualification in GIS.
Work Experiences: At least 3 years experience in the field of Geographic Information Technology (GIT) especially in managing and maintaining vector data sets, managing and use satellite imagery for census mapping and socio-economic purposes in an ESRI software working environment. Experience in developing, directing and implementing of a census or field research survey mapping project and/or conduct of census cartography work in developing countries, particularly in Africa is essential. Experience in spatial analysis and map product development will be an advantage.
Computer Skills: Knowledge of standard soft ware packages, MS Office including MS access, or any other database software, ESRI software.
Languages: Excellent command of oral and written English is essential and knowledge of Arabic is an added advantage.
Exposure to an international environment with UN/NGO/Government or a Multilateral organisation/institution; and Knowledge working with UN agencies, NGOs and humanitarian partners is an asset and additional proficiencies in database and website development, or IT is an added advantage
