Base Titanium Limited, the Kenyan subsidiary of the Australian company, Base Resources Limited, is developing the globally significant Kwale Mineral Sands Project about 50km south of Mombasa. 

The project is now funded and construction commenced in the 3rd quarter of 2011. 

Production is scheduled to start during the second half of 2013.

OHS Officer
Ref: HR/1/8

Reporting to the Occupational Health & Safety Manager, the OHS Officer will be responsible for training staff and contractors in matters relating to Occupational Health and Safety as well as assisting with the implementation and follow-up with participants post training.up to date advice OH& S matters for a fixed term of twelve months during construction and commissioning.
 
Key accountabilities include:
  • Conduct safety related inductions.
  • Prepare training reports.
  • Providing OHS information to the employees, contractors and visitors.
  • Collate and enter safety inspection reports into central data bases.
Qualifications and experience:
 
The ideal candidate will:
  • Hold a tertiary qualification. Proven experience in lieu of a tertiary qualification will be considered.
  • Have 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Be familiar with the legislative and statutory requirements of OH&S.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work in a challenging environment with a multinational workforce with minimal supervision and high ethical standards.
  • Possess good computer skills.
  • Have ability to work in a team.
  • Hold a valid driving licence.
Mobile Crane Operator

Ref: HR/2/8
  • Have at least a D in KCSE;
  • Hold a certificate of competence issued by a recognized institution certifying his competence in operating a mobile hydraulic crane.
  • Have at least 10 years’ experience in operating hydraulic mobile cranes, of which at least 5 must be on a crane with a rated capacity of 50 tonnes or more
  • Be committed to high Health and Safety standards
  • Be committed to on time job completion
  • Be prepared to work shifts or extended hours if necessary
  • Hold a valid B,C,D,E driving license.
  • Be able to drive and operate a heavy truck with a Hiab crane;
  • Experience in mobile telescopic all terrain forklifts (Manitou or similar)
  • Ability to write reports and develop load plans, if required and together with others.
  • Have basic mechanical knowledge of crane maintenance.
  • Possess good oral and written communication skill.
Be familiar with legislative and statutory requirements in Kenya with regards to mobile cranes, lifting, working at heights, etc.

Project Employee Relations Facilitator

Under supervision of the HR Manager, The Employee Relations Facilitator will be the first point of contact for SML Contractors/Kinondo registration users to provide information and support on employee relations issues and to help ensure a fair and consistent approach to organizational policies and procedures, thus promoting a positive ER culture within the business, whilst minimizing risks.

This position is for a fixed term of twelve months during construction and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • To under guidance of the HR Manager provide support in delegated matters relating to employee relations.
  • To facilitate effective case management of people related issues as assigned.
  • To assist in the maintenance of relationships with the business to promote good employee relations across the organization.
  • Monitoring trends in employment practices for appropriate proactive action.
  • Ensuring consistency in employment practices and the employee experience throughout the Project phase.
  • Ensuring adherence to ER policy, procedure, and practices, influencing appropriate stakeholders to resolution and escalating issues to management and internal partners as appropriate.
  • Facilitation of constructive dialogue and resolution of workplace conflict.
  • Mitigating risk to the organization in resolving ER related issues.
  • Conducting internal investigation of ethics line complaints and other types of internal investigations requiring appropriate handling as needed.
  • Ensuring consistent interpretation and application of employment policy and practice in all aspects of the employment relationship.
  • Assist in ER case handling as assigned by the HR Manager.
  • Undertake periodic LRIMP and Contractor compliance audits.
Skills Required / Desired:
  • A degree in a business related/social science field.
  • A higher Diploma in Human Resources Management.
  • At least 6 years continuous HR generalist working experience, 3 of which should be in an ER role.
  • Excellent communication/presentation skills and ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and across all functional areas.
  • Competent IT skills.
  • Good knowledge of Kenyan employment law, International best Practice.
  • Experience in working with Employee Councils in un-unionized employment will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of ER procedures and processes,extensive employee relations investigation experience.
  • Previous working experience in a multi-cultural, fast paced work environment is desirable.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, team-oriented, multi-cultural environment.

Duration of commitment: minimum one year


Overall responsibility

* To manage and supervise the nutrition programme in Togdheer

Detailed responsibilities include:
* Develop and manage comprehensive activity plans covering the time frame of the project
* Provide leadership to the teams regarding project objectives
* Capacity building of national staff on diagnosis and treatment of nutrition patients following International CTC treatment guidelines

IPA Programme Manager Job in Kenya - Safe Water Programme (SWP)


Safe Water Programme: Chlorine Dispenser Scale-Up

The Safe Water Programme (SWP) at Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) seeks an Operations Manager to take a key leadership role in achieving our program’s medium-term goal—providing 5 million people with sustained access to safe water, which will prevent 2.3 million cases of child diarrhoea and avert over 2,200 child deaths each year.

SWP is a growing entrepreneurial group within IPA working to reduce the 1.6 million childhood deaths each year from diarrhea, a leading cause of child mortality in Kenya and globally. The programme is doing this by deploying Chlorine Dispensers—a simple, low-cost innovation proven to dramatically increase rates of household water treatment, which significantly reduces diarrhea and other waterborne disease.

Chlorine Dispensers have been recognized by a wide network of supporters, including the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Local Government, Lake Victoria North Water Services Board and major international foundations and implementers.

Kenya is SWP’s flagship programme, currently transitioning from the proof-of-concept stage to large-scale implementation with a team of about 25 staff in Kenya, serving 200,000 people by mid-year.

The Operations Manager will work with SWP’s management team to develop, implement and manage the general programme operations as they expand across western Kenya and grow our field team to 100+ members serving millions in the coming years. This will involve overseeing staff and systems which will grow to operate Chlorine Dispensers at over 30,000 water points.

Roles

External Relations
  • Manage relationships with government partners, donors and potential donors, implementing partners, other NGOs and international institutions

Job Purpose:

The BBC WST is seeking a Project Coordinator to be based in Hargeisa, to assist in managing all
aspects of the projects in Somalia under supervision of the Country Director.

The Project Coordinator will be part of a team consisting of International Trainers, Researchers, finance/ admin staff, and local Journalism Training Mentors.

He/ she will assist to oversee the delivery of the projects, including liaising with donors and making sure that project activities are implemented in a timely and effective manner.

Main Duties:

  • With the support of the Trust’s senior trainer and producer, to ensure that all programming and training meet the highest BBC standards, as well as delivering the project’s development objectives.
  • Regular travel to Hargeisa when necessary and - if security situation allows - at short notice if required.
  • To meet all contractual requirements of the projects Donors – ensure media production by coordinating the activities of the producers in the field to ensure editorially correct and timely submission of assignments.
  • Translation of documents from Somali to English and vice versa
Required knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Strong experience in managing projects in East Africa essential (either development projects or specific media development/ training projects) - At least 3 years experience in a similar role.
  • Relevant higher education preferably in development studies, project/ business management, mass communication or other relevant educational background.
  • Computer application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet user skills.
  • Some experience of media work highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to issues of governance and transparency.

VSF Belgium Assistant Project Manager Job in Garissa Kenya

Position Title: Assistant Project Manager – Garissa

Duty Station: Garissa, Kenya

Duration: 9 Months (Renewable)

Availability: Immediately

Role

The Assistant Project Manager will oversee, lead and manage the field operations of the emergency team in Garissa.

He/She will be responsible for maintaining relationships with the various stakeholders, monitoring, and ensuring that the project meets its objectives.

He/she will support in technical backstopping of relevant areas in other Garissa based projects

Main responsibilities of

Program management and development
  • Project programming, implementation and direct management in line with both donor and VSF B guidelines and regulations
  • Ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of the project
  • Co-ordinate and manage the projects in Garissa by providing technical and strategic leadership
  • Identify and develop project proposals based on the needs of beneficiaries and specific calls from donors.
  • Ensure project implementation progress is in line with the activity work plan.
  • Ensure that donor regulations are adhered to and that VSF Belgium administrative, financial and implementation controls are observed.
  • Participate and contribute to relevant project related network and links.
  • Develop work plans, financial projections and verify all financial reports on the project
  • Manage the flow of technical reports and compilation of the same in the project narratives for internal and donor reporting.
  • Support internal and external monitoring and evaluation exercises.
  • Respond to cross cutting issues affecting the community in cooperation with specific Districts
  • Expert agencies and build on arising community needs for furtherance of humanitarian Intervention as required.
Staff management and development
  • Development of a team building strategy to promote an effective and supportive working environment within the Garissa Program.
  • Work with the Garissa team to form a strong technical team.
  • Coach and mentor staff in order to ensure that they perform to the best of their abilities and are fully aware of the theory and practise of development work and the project management cycle.
Representation of VSFB
  • Development of relationships with Government representatives, in Garissa and other local stakeholders
  • Represent VSF B in various project forum and networking levels in the target districts of operations.
Financial Management
  • Ensure that projects are implemented in full compliance with both donor and VSF B guidelines and regulations
  • Authorizing all expenditures for the project and monitoring expenditure on line items as per the approved budget
  • Timely reporting and proposal amendments as per donor regulations
  • Facilitation of visits by monitoring teams
  • Co-financing
Essential or Minimum Requirements

Education
  • University degree in a development related field, (a degree in Veterinary science or animal science would be an advantage but is not essential)
  • Post graduate training in either Pastoralism and ASALs policy, Development studies, community development,
Knowledge and experience
  • At least 5 years experience in project development and management.
  • Should have held a senior position in project management at least to senior project officer level for a minimum of 3 years
  • Good knowledge and working experience on an EC/ECHO/OFAD project is desirable
  • Dynamics of community engagement and participatory methods and monitoring field operations
  • Ability to operationalise project logical frameworks
  • Management of project budgets
  • Experience working in the Arid Lands of North Eastern Kenya is desirable
Skills
  • Computer literacy with very good MS Excel, Word and Power point
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good writing and reporting skills
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, Kiswahili and local language
  • Excellent management, planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to prepare and present issues at all levels

Duty Station: Lodwar, Kenya

Duration: 8 Months (Renewable)

Role

The Assistant Project Manager for the LOMIDAT Project will oversee, lead and manage the Technical team working on food facility and livestock market chain on the Lomidat project.

He/She will be responsible for maintaining relationships with the partner, monitoring, and ensuring that the strategies in place enable the project to reach the set objectives.

He/she will support in technical backstopping of relevant areas in other Lodwar projects, DMI, Fodder production, CERF, Emergency projects etc..

Main responsibilities of

A) Program management and development.
  • Project Action planning, implementation and coordination.
  • Networking and collaboration with the Lomidat team.
  • Facilitate the technical implementation of result two and the parts of result three of the action as appropriately designed.
  • In coordination with the VSF B Lodwar project manager coordinate research activities for the improvement of livestock market chain and the development of new project areas.
  • To maintain close linkages with the Lomidat project Butchery/factory and staff
  • To work with the Lodwar project manager, in identifying and develop new projects based on the strengths, capacity and local resources of beneficiaries and specific calls from donors.
  • To ensure synergy in the Livestock market chain project activities.
  • To work with the Livestock traders to develop a clear livestock Value chain, in Turkana.
  • To submit timely project reports based on donor guidelines to the Lodwar project.
B) Staff management and development
  • Development of a team building strategy to promote an effective and supportive working environment within the Turkana Program.
  • Work with the Lodwar team to form a strong technical team.

  • Liaison and networking with relevant livestock partners and collaborators to improve the performance of the Livestock chain project in a dynamic environment
  • Assist the Lodwar Project manager in the Development of a joint and common approach the implementation activities of all projects in for the communities in Turkana and the Ecosystem of north-western Kenya
  • Network with Lomidat project manager, General Manager and ensure a common approach and the coordination of activities
  • Promotion of team spirit on all levels within VSF belgium
Essential or Minimum Requirements

Education
  • University degree in a development related field, Range management, (a degree in Veterinary science or animal science would be an advantage but is not essential)
  • Post graduate training in either Pastoralism and ASALs policy, Development studies, Entrepreneurship, or Agricultural Economics
Knowledge and experience
  • 5 years experience in project development and management.
  • Should have held a senior position in project management and implementation at least to senior project officer level.
  • Experience of working on an EC project is an advantage
  • An understanding of the ABCD, VICOBA, PFS, CAHWAs privatization systems, WUA management and VLUP approaches is crucial.
  • Good knowledge of project cycle management
  • Experience with proposal development and implementation
  • Good knowledge of donor rules, in particular USAID, EC.
  • Experience with administering budgets

Farm Manager

The Farm Manager will be responsible for a unit producing vegetables for export and must have management experience of working in a similar position within on organised commercial horticultural enterprise in Kenya.

The ideal candidate will be aged 30-45 years with not less than six years working experience in the horticulture industry.

The candidate must be well organised with a proven track record and should be a graduate, ideally in agriculture or a related subject, must have good communication skills and the ability to supervise a large work force.

Project Supervisors

The Project Supervisors will work under the Farm Manager and will be responsible for different aspects of horticultural operations including field management, spraying, irrigation, planting and harvesting.

Applicants should hold a recognised University Degree, ideally in agriculture or a related subject and should have not less than five years experience in the horticultural industry. Applicants must be computer literate and ideally in the age range 30-45 years.

Job Description

PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER – based in Juba – working on CESVI operations in South Sudan
·         Organise, implement and follow up of awareness campaigns and other activities
·         Organise, implement and follow up of public days
·         Contribute to design strategy for awareness campaigns in Juba
·         Prepare reports on awareness raising campaigns and public events organized in Juba
·         Taking care of visibility of the action by designing leaflets, flyers and any other visibility items
·         Identify venues for open days and awareness raising events
·         Identify community groups and CBO’s to be involved in sensitization and project activities
·         Liaise with community groups and CBO mobilizing them for project activities
·         Liaise with local authorities and obtain permits for organizations of events

REQUIREMENTS
·         Secondary Education,
·         Diploma in social studies will be an advantage.
·         Minimum 3 years related working experience in INGOs or minimum 4 years of demonstrable and relevant working experience in private sector.

·         Demonstrable experience in working with community groups and in community mobilization
·         Good written and verbal English skills.
·         Diploma and/or certificates  in IT or good  IT skills will be an advantage
