The opportunity

Data from several studies suggests that among the many livelihood threats faced by low income households and enterprises are those arising from illness and death.

FSD, International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) are collaborating to support development of micro health and life insurance market ¡n Kenya.

We are looking for a micro-insurance specialist who will take the lead in exploring the market potential for health and life micro-insurance products to reduce vulnerability among low income households in Kenya.

The micro-insurance specialist will:
  • Lead in undertaking detailed research analysis work to establish an in-depth understanding of the potential market for micro health and life insurance products.
  • Assess the policy, legal and regulatory framework to identify any potential gaps;
  • Apply market insights to new product development;
  • Manage external stakeholder relationships; and,
  • Establish and maintain strong linkages with key institutional sources of expertise on micro-insurance.
Who we need

At a minimum you will have:
  • Relevant qualifications in social sciences (minimum bachelors degree in economics, banking, insurance and other related studies);
  • Experience working in risk management sector;
  • Strong quantitative research and financial analysis skills; and,
  • Ability to communicate well in written and oral form in English.

Research Lead Job in Kampala- MFSI Project Grameen Foundation Uganda


Position Title: Research Lead, Mobile Financial Services Incubator (MFSI) project

Status: Full time project contractor (18 months)

Location: Uganda (based in Kampala)

Classification: Exempt

Job Summary: The Research Lead will be responsible for managing all stages of the research process for the Mobile Financial Services Incubator (MFSI), from initial design to data collection and dissemination. He/she is expected to have strong analytical and communicative skills and experience designing and analyzing quantitative research.

The project:

Recently, there has been some concern about the lack of innovation within the branchless banking space.

Very few service providers have gone beyond payments in their service offerings and explored the latent demand for other products—from savings to micro-insurance and loans.

Research conducted by CGAP also shows that many of the existing products have not reached the poor.

To address this problem, CGAP and GF are working together to lower the cost threshold of experimentation and set up an incubator that tests innovations in mobile financial services.

The incubator will combine in-depth research approaches with rapid product testing and aim to develop mobile financial services that are appropriate for the poor and that move the industry beyond payments.

Reporting and relationships: The position will report directly to the Project Director.

Availability:

The MFSI Research Lead will be expected to work a typical work week of 37.5 hours plus additional hours to get the job done.

The position will be based in Kampala, Uganda. This position will need to be flexible to work in local conditions, and be available to work across different time zones.

This position will require travel (20%-30%) within Uganda, and periodic travel to other countries as needed.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develop a research plan for the incubator
  • Work with the AppLab team to determine product ideas that could be tested
  • Work with Research Coordinator to hire and monitor researchers in the field
  • Facilitate data collection process
  • Analyze data collected

  • Experience in the dissemination of research findings, both through formal (academic publications) and informal (blogs etc.) channels
  • Strong writing skills
  • Understanding of technology, particularly mobile money applications

Education and Experience
  • At least post-graduate degree with research PhD preferred
  • 5+ years experience in research role

Regional Program Officer, Africa, Bankers without Borders® Job in Nairobi Kenya



Position Title: Regional Program Officer, Africa, Bankers without Borders®

Status: Full Time, Project Based (Project end date December 30, 2011

Job Summary: The Regional Program Officer, Africa, will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and monitoring Bankers without Borders® (“BwB”) volunteer projects in the Africa region.

BwB is Grameen Foundation’s initiative to engage business professionals in skills-based volunteer projects that support microfinance and technology-for-development initiatives and organizations. He/she also will develop and liaise with local sources for volunteers including but not limited to companies, associations, microfinance clubs, and institutions of higher education.

Reporting: The BwB Regional Program Officer will report to the Director of Bankers without Borders® while working directly with other members of BwB, the Africa Regional Team, and other departments within Grameen Foundation.

Availability: The BwB Regional Program Officer will be expected to work a standrard 40 hour workweek plus additional hours as necessary to get the job done. The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, and will require travel within the region and abroad. It will also require availability for overseas phone conversations in the evenings.

Essential Job Functions

The Regional Program Officer will be directly engaged in or support the following activities:
  • Manage a portfolio of BwB project activities with MFIs, local and regional microfinance networks, and other pro-poor organizations whose mission and interests are aligned with the Grameen Foundation.
  • Build relationships with and actively educate local MFIs and microfinance networks about BwB.
  • Review and respond to requests for support from partners and others.
  • Conduct due diligence on potential BwB client organizations where appropriate, including preparing/reviewing due diligence reports in close coordination with the regional staff and other product/service teams.
  • Serve as primary liaison to and provide logistical support to volunteers assigned to BwB projects in the region.
  • Cultivate local sources of volunteers in the region.
  • Perform monitoring and evaluation of ongoing BwB projects in the region.
  • Obtain client feedback and document learning.
  • Serve as the BwB liaison to Grameen Foundation staff operating in the region.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of latest industry developments related to microfinance and technology-for-development in all countries of responsibility.
  • Assist in fundraising activities for BwB work in the region in coordination with the Regional CEO and the Director of BwB.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Introduction

World Concern is an International Christian humanitarian relief and development organization working in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Established in 1955, World Concern works to alleviate suffering among the poor in developing countries and to address the root causes in each context.

The organization’s primary strategy is community-based integrated development. It works in multiple-sectors to build the capacity of village-based groups, non-governmental partners and other counterparts to lead and sustain their development.

World Concern is committed to best practices of inclusive, participatory and accountable relief and development programming and maintains rigorous standards of both financial, monitoring, reporting and all aspects of its programming. Program assistance is provided on the basis of need alone, without regard to race, creed or religion.

The Productive Assets Recovery and Institutional Strengthening (PARIS) project is an ongoing 3 year project that is funded by EC. The project is facilitating rural communities in Gogrial East, South Sudan recover from the effects of the 20 years of war through provision of support to their livelihood systems mainly agriculture, livestock production and enterprise development.

The project has a strong component of building local institutions as one way of enhancing sustainable community development.

Job Purpose:

To manage the microfinance sector of the project and be responsible for planning and execution of the sectoral project activities to fit coherently with other sector activities, World Concern Sudan Country strategy and the overall organizational goals, and achieve desired goals and objectives.

Summary of Main Responsibilities:
  • Provide overall leadership and direct the successful implementation of PARIS Microfinance sector and roll out project activities within the project area as well as initiate sustainable economic activities that empower communities in focus;
  • Ensure quality, focus and feasibility in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of PARIS Microfinance sector interventions in target communities;
  • Ensure that the project interventions are designed and developed in conformity with World Concern ministry priorities and industry accepted norms and standards in community-based microfinance programming model;
  • Actively engage with grass root communities to understand their needs and ensure project activities make the greatest impact among the beneficiaries served
  • Identify and/or develop required project tools and methodological approaches, and provide technical assistance and training/capacity building to ensure project interventions achieve or surpass established objectives;
  • Provide effective leadership to project staff and enhance a learning culture - based upon evidenced based best practices and industry standards - to enable project staff achieve established targets and standards;
  • Impart appropriate mentoring, coaching and supervision among community resource persons in order to equip, motivate and empower them for program sustainability
  • Ensure full compliance with project donor’s requirement in accordance with the project contract.
  • Collaborate with other local development players and actors seeking and maximizing opportunities for synergy creation and efficiency in our programming.
  • Coordinate different projects and activities in Gogrial East County to ensure their smooth implementation, harmony and optimum impact
  • Function as the team leader for World Concern in Gogrial East County
Required Education, Skills & Experience:
  • A relevant university degree, preferably in Social Sciences/Community Development/ entrepreneurship
  • At least 3 years experience in managing a microfinance and micro enterprise development project targeting post conflict communities
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills, adult training and community mobilization skills.
  • Able to design and plan new projects using log frame methodology and implement the plans to achieve established objectives
  • Must be disciplined, proactive, able to work with little supervision, and resolve conflicts.
  • Proven ability to write project proposals and donor reports.
  • Highly motivated in changing lives at the grassroots level and among people in a post-conflict area/country through transformational development processes
  • Identification with the values of World Concern, commitment to leadership and mentoring skills and a strong willingness to learn, tolerate and deal with complex socio-political issues in a cross-cultural, sometimes, unstable environment.
